Unusual Aquariums - biOrb and Fluval

Updated on June 18, 2016

Types of aquariums

At PondQuip we've found nano aquariums to be extremely popular. Popular to the extent that in hindsight we probably should have called ourselves Aquarium-Quip.

This hub is going to to be on a few of the varieties of nano aquarium, how are they different and what makes them special.

Why are Nano tanks popuar?

Nano tanks are great when you only have limited space, usually easily fitting on a desk of coffee table. Many nano aquariums are designed to be very visually appealing compared to traditional rectangular aquariums, they are a piece of home furniture.

Everything you need to get started is included.

They usually come as a complete package, pump, filter, lights. Ready to go from the moment you take it out of the box.

Fluval EDGE

Fluval Edge Aquarium

I have never seen anything like the Fluval Edge before, this glass nano aquarium gives a unique visual effect. The glass lid is fully sealed except for a hole in the top centre which is covered. This allows the water level to go right to the top giving the appearance of a solid cube of water.

Huge Viewing Angle

In a normal fish tank, when you look at it from above the light is distorted when travelling through glass, then air, then water then reflected back through water, air and glass again. The Fluval Edge doesn't have this problem. Because the water goes right to the top the light is not distorted, it can be viewed equally from any angle.

What's in the box

Included in the Fluval Edge box is everything required to get set up. A hang on filter and bright LED lights that last forever. A surprising addition was a bottle of beneficial bacteria to get your biological filtration kick started and a bottle of water conditioner to remove the harmful chlorine from tap water.

The Fluval Edge comes in two sizes, a 23 Litre and 46 Litres. They are available in black or white colours.

BiOrb Life Aquarium

BiOrb Aquariums

The BiOrb aquariums are our second most popular aquariums but it's my personal favourite. They are acrylic which is lighter and 10 times stronger than glass. Glass aquariums are mostly confined to rectangular shapes whereas acryclic can be any shape.

The air driven filter is hidden at the bottom of the central columb of bubbles and contains activated carbon and a sponge. The aquarium floor is covered with highly porous rock, perfect for the colonisation of beneficial waste converting bacteria.

These three filtration methods covers all your mechanical, chemical and biological filtration needs.

What's in the box

Included in the box you get a LED light, air pump, BiOrb filter and porous biological filter media that sites in the bottom of the tank.

BiOrbs come in three sizes, 30L, 45L and 60L and three colours black, white and red.

Marine Nano Tanks

Some people even convert them to be marine (salt water) aquariums. You can see some great examples of creativity on YouTube with these Fluval Edge and BiOrb aquariums
