Funny Pictures of Animals and Their Unusual Friendships

I love animal stories and judging by the number of pages dedicated to them, loads of other people do too. On this page I've picked out some of my favorite amazing stories of animals and their unusual friendships they have developed - friendship you just wouldn't believe until you saw them. Who could imagine a friendship between a hippo and a turtle, or a giraffe and an ostrich, cats and dogs, an organutan and a dog, an elephant and a dog and a crow and a kitten? Yet here they are, astonishing stories that will make you go Awwww.

Vote for your favourite in the poll and take the quick quiz on the collective terms for animals. Before you go be sure to give me a thumbs up, and leave a comment telling us how you scored in the quiz.

We could learn a lot from the animal kingdom. Generally, we expect species to stick to their own species, but isn't it heartwarming when you see it need not always be the case? Here are a number of examples of how it is possible to cross boundaries, to ignore convention and make friends where ever you can find them.

Be sure to check out all the wonderful animal pictures and animal videos.

The Baby Hippo and the Giant Turtle

In 2005 a tsumani wave swept into the Kenyan coast. Wildlife commentators reported an amazing friendship developed between an orphaned baby hippo and a giant turtle. The pair appear to have become inseparable. The story is told by Annalene on Hubpages. [Extract reproduced with permission.]

The Ostrich and the Giraffe

The story of the giraffe and the ostrich

Bea is a three year old giraffe in Florida who has made friends with Wilma the ostrich.

Ostriches are notoriously bad tempered but Willma looks far from it.

Would it happen in the wild?

Look out Wilma - that is one big tongue Bea has there.

The Crow who Adopted a Kitten

An abandoned kitten was tossed over a fence. She wouldn't let the humans near her but accepted the help of a wild crow. The crow seemed to adopt the tiny kitten even feeding her. Now they are best friends.

The Amazing Friendship Between A Dog and an Elephant

All the elephants at this rescue centre in Hohenwald Tennessee pick another elephant as a special friend and companion. All except Tarra, her best friend is Bella the dog. Just goes to show that size doesn't matter. During their life together the pair were inseparable and spend all their time together. Bella even let Tarra rub her tummy with her huge foot such was her complete trust. Sadly Bella died in 2011 but her inspiration lives on in a trust - Bella's Fund - whose funds are used to look after the elephants.

Research into unusual animal friendships

A recent BBC documentary travelled the world trying to reveal what made different species bond to each other like these tales.

The conclusion appears to be that animals will imprint or bond onto other creatures either soon after birth or as a result of emotional trauma.

Whatever the species, what it shows to me is an overwhelming need for companionship, acceptance and love, in whatever form that comes along.

I've seen some of these before, and definitely liked watching them again. Friendship is so special, no matter the species.

Interspecial relationships are actually quite common. Bonding is a necessity in all life forms, and just because it is a bit out of the ordinary doesn't mean that it isn't real. Fum and Gebra, a Spanish owl and cat have their own Facebook page. I believe the cat has passed on, but there are records of quite a number of them. Some animals have even saved others from harm or death. Great outlook on a very real phenomena relating to interspecial sentience.

This really is a feel good article. I love seeing stories with a happy ending and that is what these videos are. Beautiful inter-species friendships.
