What to Do If You Are Chased by a Angry Dog That Wants to Bite You
I can't tell you all the countless stories growing up in this small islands and have been chased by countless of mongrel dogs on the streets. The thing is, there are no dog laws that exist in Jamaica and their are thousands of loose dogs all over the island scourging threw trash cans and other garbage piles for food. At nighttime these same dogs form gang banger and move around in a menacing posse driving fear into late walkers at night. Many of these dogs have even attacked and have bitten to death elderly folks. I myself have had the pleasure of being chased by a few of these always hungry mutts, but of course, as a dog owner and an animal enthusiast, I know what to do to get the dogs to back off.
Before dogs begin to chase after you, they will sniff the air and they will smell that fear you have cowering in your heart. If walking and suddenly you encounter a menacing stray dog on the road, many people will stop and being to panic, that panic releases the fear in your body which the dog can sense. First thing to member is fear will always make the other party seem stronger. King fear out and lets proceed.
1. Never Run When Dog At Close Range
As contrary to what your natural instincts will be that if a dog dashes at you you should run, unless you are sure that you can outrun the dog, it is best to remain still and assert firmness, take out your phone and call for help. The about running is this, if you are at a good distance from the dog attacking you, then you can run and find safety in some public building or even someones home. But if that animal suddenly pounces upon you, running away may not be the best option as dogs are faster than humans and when you run the dog will chase and be more inclined to bite.
2. Shout at The Dog
Yell Stop! Go away in an affirmative tone. Yell this several times to ensure that the dog understands that you want him gone. Don't use hand gestures as this could symbolize something else in the dog's mind. While yelling stop go away, take small steps back ways away from the dog. This ensures that a good pace is kept between you ans the animal in case it still decides to do a quick rush at you. This will allow you to quickly look at how to maneuver the dog's attack.
3. Place Anything In Your Hand In front of You
If you are a lady and being chased and cornered by an angry dog who wants more than a kiss, if you have a bag with you use it as a barrier between you and the animal. If the dog should attack, ensure that it mauls that bag before it even gets to any part of your body.
4. Use Your Weapon
I love dogs, I have a blog about dogs, cats and other animals. But in my book, self preservation is always first. If a vicious dog chases you and you fear for your life, use whatever weapon you have with you to defend yourself. But always try to be scuttle and do not intentionally try to kill the animal. So let us say you are a licensed firearm holder. You should already have been trained with the use of the weapon. You can shoot the animal somewhere where it will not be life threatening. Having a taser is just s effective. Always use less force before lethal force.
5. Call The Dog by Name
If the animal is a known dog which belongs to someone and just have gotten loose and you know the animals name, call out to the animal by name and tell the animal to go! Calling the dog by name breeds familiarity in the dog mind and it may believe that you know him/her somehow and back away.
