Why Great Danes Are the Comedians of the Canine World

Updated on November 19, 2013

dog breeds: Great Dane

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Great Danes have the best sense of humor of all dog breeds! Sure, they look imposing and noble and regal, but deep down inside, they're really just clowns in fur suits! Okay, so they don't have the round red noses, but they do have really big feet...err...paws. Our two Dane boys keep us laughing all the time. I honestly believe that Great Danes love the sound of human laughter, or maybe they can sense when their human pack enjoys something. Either way, the gentle giants have an amazing sense of humor.

We have two male Great Danes - Hamlet and Grendel. Grendel is our resident clown. He's so goofy that he often reminds me of Marmaduke, Scooby Doo, and Astro Jetson. It's like he goes out of his way to be funny. Sometimes when he goes outside, he'll find a low hanging limb and use it as a scratching post. Sometimes he just stands in front of us with his head cocked to one side and then suddenly runs in circles. Oftentimes, he'll start to jump up on the bed but stop when he gets halfway. His front half will be on the bed, while his hind legs and feet are still on the floor. Then he'll look at us pitifully, reminding us of poor Tiny Tim. He gets into the strangest positions while sleeping and napping that he's even funny when he's asleep. Observe the photos below.

Grendel gave us a big surprise a couple of weeks ago. My daughter brought her female Dane over for a doggie play day, and Kayla was in heat. Both my boys were neutered years ago, but Grendel didn't quite understand that. The dogs were quiet, so I went into the office to check on them, and there were Grendel and Kayla, ummm, "conjoined." The look on Grendel's face was priceless.

Hamlet is much more dignified than Grendel. The adult kids say Hammie is "snooty." He's not snooty - he just prefers the company of the grandkids over the company of their parents. He's absolutely fascinated with little kids. He'll actually encourage them to ride him and to use him as a warm chair. Hamlet is also very gentle. He often "adopts" stuffed animals and carries them around in his cavernous jaws. He never shakes them or tears them up. Instead, he regularly "grooms" them by trying to bite the (imagined) fleas from their fake fur. I'll admit, he's much more reserved and not as silly as Grendel, but even he has his funny moments. One of the most hilarious is when he chases the red laser light from the laser pen. You should see him try to find the little red dot when it goes under the TV hutch! He also likes to pounce on the dot. As soon as Randy Godwin shows me how to download our videos to Youtube (I'm a tech dummie), I'll share it with you. In the meantime, enjoy these funny dog videos starring Great Danes!

Grendel napping.
Grendel napping.

The scary banana

Hamlet and Grendel act this way when confronted with scary items like "Men Working" signs, green plants, and spray cans containing any substance. They also hate the vacuum cleaner, so I've given up vacuuming. It was a real sacrifice, but I had to do it for the dogs!

Hamlet and Grendel love ice, and they also love drinking from the bathroom sink whenever I run the water for them. There's just something about that water that's SO much better than the water in their dish!

The towel monster and the Great Dane

Our Danes love this game! They also enjoy a good game of hide and seek.

Dane on a trampoline

My grandkids have a trampoline, but we haven't let the dogs try it out yet. I was kind of afraid they might eat it!

Talking Great Dane

I forgot to mention that all the Great Danes I've owned have tried their darnedest to talk. A black female I had years ago, named Ebony, could voice something that sounded just like "I love you." Hamlet and Grendel often talk to us when we speak directly to them.

Great Dane and the balloon

Hamlet and Grendel act just like this when we let them out to run. they'll run around the front yard several times, then they're ready to come back in to their sofa. They're generally a lazy dog breed!

Habee, I've seen pics of the other 1, Hamlet, & he's the 1 that looks like Marmaduke, Scooby Doo, and Astro. Just saying. I have a boxer, & my 10 yr old believes I know how to talk dog because I always "Talk" to her in dog. LOL. Good writing on that Dane!!!

I've only seen Great Danes out for a walk, never imagined they have the humor and personality you described.

Thanks for sharing the videos, habee - plus the funny picture of "Grendel napping." The videos were fun to watch, especially the towel monster...that's one BIG POOCH ya got there. Seems like the dogs are extra-gentle, though, like they're aware they can hurt ya just due to their huge size.

Funny thing about dogs and vacuum cleaners, isn't it. I used to have a dog that was scared of the clothes drier.

Your dogs remine me of the joke-Where does he slepp-Anywhere he likes.

      They do look adorable though

I have had 3 Great Danes to date and they are playful, but DUMB!!! One of them was terrified of cats and they all were very difficult to train. I love the breed, but they are so dumb! :-))

Greek, I've had decades of experience with many breeds, as a trainer, breeder, and owner, and I must disagree with you! Hamlet is the smartest dog I've ever worked with - and the easiest to train. My other Danes have been much the same. Maybe your dogs were brain damaged. lol

Habee, I love these animals, that's why I had three of them to date and all three of them were adoreable, playful, loving, but dumb!

      :-))

It is of course possible that it is their owner who is the dumb one, but I am sticking to my guns :-))

Greek, let me give you an example of how smart Hamlet is: when he was a pup, I wanted to train him to ring a bell when he needed to go outside for a bathroom break. I showed him ONCE. Just ONE TIME, and he understood! Both my Danes understand a wide range of voice commands, most of which I didn't "teach" them - they just picked them up. Were all 3 of your Great Danes from the same line? I've had 9, and all of them were smart and easy to train!

Loved the vids, too! You must get yours up on youtube - my problem at first was converting them and then uploading them but it's so cool. Griffin and your fellows would get along just fine as he does many of the same things. We keep saying what did we do before we had Griff - oh yeah, we had Kodi! Denaya is kinda like the resident princess who just smiles benignly and oversees her 'kingdom' with her regal airs. Last night Griffin was running literal circles around her on the deck - back and forth - bringing her one huge toy after another as an offering while she just politely watched him. THAT was hysterical! Or we need to get a life I suppose but I can't help it. I seem to love mine as much as you love yours! Again though, I'm NOT showing Griffin that picture of Grendel napping - he will be sorely pissed...even though that is HIS preferred position of napping! I keep saying 'cover it up man'....usually he is plopped upside down though in front of the FAN!

I love the picture of him napping. That is so funny! My Schnauzer is also afraid of the vacuum cleaner. He will run up to it really fast, try to bite it, and quickly run away. It's hilarious! I would love to have a Great Dane one day. I have always thought they were adorable!
