So you want to Adopt a Dog?

Updated on January 5, 2015

Things to think about when adopting a dog.

Is adopting a large breed dog right for you? We have 3 large dogs which we adopted and who are very much part of our family, they all needed a good loving home through no fault of their own. But we did take a gamble adopting these dogs, as we did not know what problems they may or may not have had, bad habits that may be installed in them? Follow our story here where we introduced our adopted dogs to our family, and share the fun. Make an informed decision about bringing an older dog into your home. And the rewards of giving a dog a good home.

A dog is for life not just when they are cute puppies, or when they become too much work. The dogs we ended up with were cute as pie puppies but grew into big dogs! So If you are a dog lover, and thinking of giving a dog a second chance in your home, read this page and see how we got on with not only re-homing 1 but 3 large breed dogs.

They are big dogs a Bullmastif & a Douge de Bourdeaux and not forgetting Baby Belle the British Bulldog! and need a lot of attention and care and commitment from our owners, you will enjoy reading this humorous take on how they are pampered pets, but also has a serious message, to help our fellow four-legged friends too.

They are lucky they have a home that is warm, and owners that just love us, their lives never started out like this though, and if our family did not adopt us, I don't know what would have happened. There are hundreds of abandoned dogs every year needing your help. You can read our story of how much fun it is to adopt a dog, but spare a thought for the other big dogs that still need somewhere and if it was not for animal centers, dedicated to helping them, then what would happen to these Dogs?

Dog Adoption

Meet the Family

Mum stays at home, as she does not keep very well, so we keep her company and make sure she is okay. Dad works all day but we love it when he comes home! Our Sister, Rebecca, well she is just the sweetest girl ever. And we have our Nanna and Granny, who we love coming to stay over and spoil us rotten. We also live in harmony with Jura the Lion lop Rabbit, who is as spoiled as us, check out her fancy house, and she just loves bobbing in an out, and loves nothing better than hopping around us!

Roxy the Bull mastiff (the darker one), when she was a puppy, her future was uncertain, being the "runt" of the litter, meant the owners would probably not sell her. Thank goodness Mum and Dad said they would take her, and me my name is Molly and I am Douge de Bourdeaux, who had a horrible introduction to life and started out like living in a top floor flat, being badly treated.

What do we ask for...nothing but some love, and we get plenty here.

And as if we did not have enough we just had to rescue our Little bulldog Belle......on naughty days she get her full sunday name Isabelle, and she is rather cheeky, but oh so cute

Plenty of Exercise For your Dog - These are my own videos of Molly and Roxy

Tired dogs are happy doggies!

When mum reaches for the leads, we try to pretend to get excited! And act like a dog playing fetch with our ball, this is just to keep mum happy....You see a lot of people would like to think we need lots of exercise, because we are such big dogs....due to our breeds and our heavy bone structure it is not wise for us to have lots of exercise Yes we need a daily walk, and some exercise, it is good for us and keeps us healthy, however we prefer to do something else completely.

What else do we do?

Sleep...

Yeah Roxy and I love to sleep, it is so good, when we return from our walk, we are really tired out and we flop down on the kitchen floor.....

Adopting dogs and bringing them into your family

But you know the kitchen floor really is not comfy....

When mum got her new leather suite, she said "NO dogs allowed" yeah well that rule lasted long....

And nothing makes me feel better than wee cuddle from my big sister....

I will share a secret with you

I am not the laziest dog, I need a lot of exercise. But I get out more than Roxy the mastiff.

You see our Roxy jumped off a cliff! yes you heard me right a CLIFF, a very high one, I mean they call me the silly one?.... She chased a seagull over the cliff, so she had to spend some time in the doggie hospital, it gave her a big fright, so sometimes she just loves to be all wrapped up and cozy and know we are there, she cannot get walked as much now either, as although Roxy had broken no bones, she really did hurt herself and we need to be careful not to get her too excited, in case she hurts herself again. But the people at the doggie hospital were so good and even one of the volunteers stayed with her overnight to make sure she was okay....man they do some work at these places, all for their love of animals, and they don't even get paid!

So Roxy loves nothing better than having a great big cuddle, and a blanket.

***Please note Roxy passed into doggy Heaven, but will always have a special place in our hearts****

Pet Blankets - perfect for the pampered pooch

If mom ever gets a new Sofa, I wonder if she will stick to the rule of "no dogs allowed" this is what I would love, a cozy blanket to snuggle into.

~I am thankful every day that Molly and Roxy found their way to our home ~

They bring so much fun and laughter to our lives

Do they live the life or what?...They love it when people talk to them!

This is a great lens, love the stories, pictures and video's. I think you bring attention to the need for dogs to be rescued in a fun way. Enjoyed the quiz at the end. Brought me back up the page to reread a few things, but I still missed one.

I love the pics of the dogs on the sofa!!! It doesn't seem to matter what you do, dogs will always find their way onto a comfy seat and leave you lots of hairs and fur as reminders that there were there LOL! Loved this lens. Blessed by a Squid Angel ;)

Molly and Roxy, I must apologize because I've passed up this special story of yours many times thinking I had visited you here. Pat, pat, scratch behind the ears and belly rubs to both of you. Also, I have lensrolled your special story to my I Want a Dog lens. Yes, you got it, it is very sad...you see I can't have a dog where I live but I think about having one to love almost every day. Yes, I would certainly adopt fine folks just like the two of you! Give Mum and Rebecca special kisses for me!

Molly and Roxy, you are wonderful darlings. And you do such a good job of taking care of your mum. You two wrote a wonderful story and I really appreciate how you did a great write-up about BuckHawk Center. We hope you have a wonderful holiday and all the animals here at BuckHawk send you a Paws Up!

Good lens. Although I come from a culture that does not believe dogs are a part of the family, I never felt that way.
