A Tribute to Our Dog Remy

Updated on April 13, 2015

A Tribute to our Late Dog Remy & Introduction to our New Vizsla Puppy

Well Mother's Day was rough for our family this year. Our one year old dog Remy died in a tragic accident earlier that week. Our nephews were distraught and my brother who spent time training Remy during the pheasant hunting season last fall shed a tear. If you knew how stoic my brother was, you'd know just how much everyone in our family cared for our beloved Remy.

Growing up on a farm in central rural Minnesota, my family always had a dog and once my husband and I moved back to Minnesota to be near our nephews, we knew that getting a dog was a certainty. Since my entire family consists of sportsmen, we decided to get a Hungarian Vizsla. They are known for their remarkable hunting skills so they are ideal for the pheasant hunting that is an integral part of my family. But that isn't the primary reason we decided on a Vizsla (since I personally am not a hunter)....the other is that they make great family pets that are loyal and highly affectionate. And their small to medium size makes them perfect as a house pet.

So back in 2008, we found our little puppy Remy at a terrific breeder in Iowa. We made the trek down to pick him up and from the day we laid eyes on him, he fulfilled all our expectations and then some.

With Death Comes Life....

The day Remy died was so sad for our entire family. He had brought us so much joy and created many great memories. And we'll remember him for years to come as we sit on the chair where he chewed away the wood or our leather couch where he chewed a hole as a puppy (we wouldn't trade the holes for anything!). He loved to greet all of our friends and family at the door with a kiss (whether they wanted one or not). He cozied up to everyone and loved playing fetch with our nephews. He even let us dress him up for Halloween. And although he hadn't exactly mastered the art of hunting, my brother was so looking forward to training him more this Spring and of course, pheasant hunting with him this fall. We will miss our Remy dearly!

The day he passed on we dug a small grave on the family farm, had a service where we lit a memorial candle, and planted a pine tree in his memory.

But out of the ashes rose new found happiness as we were able to get a new puppy. The same breeder where we got Remy had a new litter this Spring that he said he would be selling shortly. So we of course signed up to buy another Vizsla....if she is anything like Remy, we'll be one of the luckiest families in the world. Just look how happy my nephew is holding her!

Very nice lens! These dogs are so pretty, and as puppies, they're of course as adorable as can be.

Hi! What a wonderful lens, great tribute to one of the greatest dogs one can adopt! Please come and check out my own lens about the Vizsla. :o) I also have other lenses on Hungary, one named Budapest, and one named Balaton, and another one about the Hungarian porcelain made in Herend. Hope you will enjoy visiting, and we could lens-roll each-others' lenses.

I really do feel for your loss - we lost a 14 month old dog in an accident (that we had rescued at 9 months) and it was the most traumatic thing our girls have ever been through. It was utterly devastating and for what seems like an eternity the pain is just unbearable. All you want to be able to do for the children is take their pain away and make it better for them.

But the shock and pain does fade and you learn to cope with it - but it's one of those life lessons you would do anything not to have to go through.

But like you, we got another puppy - as a worker from home, the house was just too empty for me - and she brings us a lot of joy.
