Hi it depends on how much experience you have with dogs, what kind of home you live in and what your family consists of -for example do you have very young children/toddlers.
Some of the best - and the most beautiful dogs - on the planet are the cross-breeds. Some people can be quite snobbish about cross-breeds, but I've had cross-breeds as well as pedigrees, and they are absolutely brilliant dogs and were very good with children. So if this is your first dog then perhaps a cross-breed would be suitable. If it is a pedigree your after then some of the best family dogs are labradors and labrador retrievers. A friend of mine has Boxers and they are daft and full of fun, and very good with the family.
Some people first time round also go for the Collie breeds. But unless you are very experienced I would shy away from the Collies. I have had Border, Smooth and Rough Collies and they are brilliant dogs and very good with children. But you need to be able to exercise them a great deal or you find they get bored, destructive and can get nippy. It is also better to have had some experience in handling dogs before getting the high energy breeds such as Collies, German Shepherds and so on.
Lastly, dogs on the whole do respond better to family life if there is a garden they can muck about in - or part of a garden. But make sure it is secure. Hope this helps a bit.
