when kittens are newborns, assuming they do not have a mother, they need to be fed kitten replacer milk every two hours. follow the directions on the container to mix it properly. i have found if you put the water in a jar that has a lid (either preheated or heat it in the microwave before adding the formula) then add the KMR put the lid on and shake it good. it is way better at getting rid of the lumps. i have also found it is safer and easier to feed them with an eye dropper. if they are this young and have no mother they will need to be stimulated to go to the bathroom. do this by taking a warm damp cloth and rubbing their genitals in a circular motion, gently.
once the kittens reach 4 weeks old, their teeth are starting to poke through. it is time to introduce them to solid food. it is easier if you offer them canned kitten food. not canned adult food as it does not have the need nutrition for a kitten. a kitten needs the KMR until it is at least 8 weeks old. but at 4 weeks you can start teaching it to drink from a shallow dish, such as a jar lid or butter bowl lid. at first they will not have good balance and will sniff the KMR into their noses and sneeze it out again, but they will get the hang of it. when they do, offer them water in the same shallow dish. it is harder for them to see the water and they will go through the whole sneezing thing again. as their teeth get bigger and their jaws get stronger, offer them purina kitten chow, ground or broken up into tiny bits. later let the bits get a bit bigger. finally let them try the kitten chow in its normal size. never leave a bowl of water unattended with a kitten or kittens under 2-3 months old. they are not steady enough nor aware enough of their environment. they will either fall face first into it and maybe drown or spill it and get soaking wet and maybe get sick. kittens should stay on the kitten food for the first yr of their life. free choice. they should get their first set of vaccines around 8 weeks amd the next set in 3 weeks after that and the final set 3 weeks after that. they should be wormed with the first set. at 4 months they should be spayed or neutered.
