I agree that brurshing them thoroughly every day- helps, but I also had to change my cats food. My little female calico is forever grooming herself, so the hair balls really became a problem as she got older. I bought a quality cat food that is specifically designed to help with hairballs. This really helped. There is also an ointment in a tube (can't remember the brand name) on the market that can help.
