In my opinion the breed of cattle should match the terrain. In Texas we have great good luck with Brahma cattle as they can take the heat, insects and general, overall conditions in Texas. We have a lot of Angus and Brangus raisers here along with Hereford raisers. Some even raise Limousine -- and they're beautiful. A prudent rancher will look at his land, general weather patterns, ratio of acres to cow and go from there. Many ranchers in Texas have simply taken their losses and moved on due to our ongoing drought conditions these last three years. Seems our government doesn't worry a lot about America's consumption of beef or the availability of it.
