There should be many more but I think quite a lot of their habitats are disappearing - like waste grassy spaces near woodland, old hedgerows with plenty of cover, wild places in general. And when they do emerge from hibernation they're likely to get run over on the roads.
If people left a wild area in their gardens and local authorities let some areas go wild there'd be plenty more. They do a good job, eating insects and bugs and what not. They are not pests or vermin.
