   Dogs and cats are all great pets.
   So the question isn't related to the pet.
   But it is related to the "Pet Owner".
   Some owners (and their family) are better of having a cat who "walks it's own ways".
   Others are better of having a dog who "follows the owner" come rain or shine.

   Depends what you want in a pet.
   I couldn't make that decision, personally. I love all animals. If I had my way, I would have a pig!

   I don't have any pets but would choose a cat every time over a dog. Which is better to have? It depends very much on the circumstances of the person/people involved. Cats are more subtle and have that famous independence thing going on, whereas dogs seem to need walks and mollycoddling and all that wolfy business.

      You are so right-cats are more independent,and even if you die or happen to leave on vacation they could care less.Much better than going for walks and taking care of a pet that cares about you.

      Uhm you do not have the same cats that I have.  I go away and when I get back they are velcroed to me for a day or so.  When the dog goes with my hubby, one of my cats miss him very much and is vocal about it. hehe

   It's really not about the pet so much as it is the owner.
   Some people prefer cats because they don't crave as much attention as dogs and they use the bathroom in their litter boxes. Where as dogs are usually taken out for a walk.
   It's also possible to leave out enough water and dry cat food for one to go away overnight or a weekend and not have to worry all that much about what their house will look back when they return.
   Canned cat food I imagine is less expensive than canned dog food.
   A lot of dog owners love the companionship that dogs offer. They will fetch things, usually playful, and will sound the alarm by barking if someone approaches your home. Cats can be aloof and distant but they're low maintenance. Naturally the breed of dog and cat makes a difference as well. Big dogs require more of everything.

   depends on the preference of the owner I suppose, but for me it's cats all the way.  Dogs are too needy, they tend to be extremely high-maintenance and prone to separation anxiety.  My cats are affectionate, but can see to their own needs and are far less hyper needy than dogs.  I like dogs, don't get me wrong - I just prefer the independent spirit and personalities of cats.

   I like both and have both and have had both all my adult life.  Growing up we had dogs.  After I got married we had dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits, ducks, chickens and even goats.  I would have them all again if I had the chance and the money and space to have them.
