If your dog has developed a strong smell you should have him examined since he might have developed a bacterial or yeast infection. If your dog has always smelled strong, and does not have a health problem, it is probably because of a heavy production of skin oils. One of our Rotties smells strongly and needs to be bathed weekly, a Schnauzer at least once a month, and my Pitbull only needs a bath a few times a year (unless she rolls in a dead animal or fresh horse manure). Siberians and Maltese are a few of the breeds that do not have a strong odor.
If you are thinking of getting a new dog, and this is an important factor for you, look at my profile page and read the article about breeds that do not skink, much. All dogs have some odor but these have very little.
