Most small dogs are somewhat over-energetic or like to bark, chew things, or dont want to be held. Only ONE dog i ever owned LIKED to be held... doesn't bark much... and is playfull. That is a small shi-tzu. She is so affectionate i call her "smoochy." Don't be confused by (my avitar pic) the dog you see me holding. That one is a Pomeranian. They are very good dogs, but not as good a choice as the shi-tzu's. Do NOT get a Cairn Terrier (Toto, wizard of oz) They are VERY energetic... run around jumping and biting and chewing. Chihuahuas are very NERVOUS dogs so those too are not a good choice. Whatever you get, it is best to get a FEMALE dog. The male dogs are usually more feisty and less friendly. The females are also easier to housebreak. Dogs from a PET STORE usually have problems wanting to chew paper, bite things, and eat feces... (because of the conditions they are living in). Puppies from individual-homes are much less traumatized and therefore have far fewer emotional problems. My last bit of advise is to "Don't give up on the dog until she is about ONE year old. It takes about one year for the "puppyness" to go away and they calm down and become the good friend you are hoping for.
