Small Dog Rescue

Updated on February 08, 2017

Because every dog deserves a home

Not every dog in need of a forever home is a mongrel. Just about every breed has an organization devoted to rescuing its own - and its "wannabes." People devoted to their breeds work for the welfare of all dogs - because they all deserve "forever homes."

As a "dog person" and co-owner of a small dog boutique. (our shop, GollyGear.com donates 10% of profits to rescue) we've become familiar with many resources available to people looking for the perfect dog for their families. If you're looking for a purebred dog, but you'd really like to adopt from rescue, you can still find the right dog.

French Bulldog Rescue

The French Bulldog Rescue Network is an independent, North American rescue organization, not affiliated with any AKC breed clubs. Our purpose is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome Frenchies in need.

The mission of the Karen Krings Memorial Fund and of the French Bulldog Village is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome French Bulldogs and French Bulldog mixes, to provide financial assistance and support services to rescue groups and private rescuers engaged in rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming French Bulldogs and French Bulldog mixes, and to promote programs that advance knowledge about, and the responsible acquisition and ownership of, the French Bulldog breed.

French Bulldog Connection Rescue mission is to aid French Bulldogs, mixes and other dogs who are honorary French Bulldogs, whether from animal shelters or pounds, owner surrenders, strays or to help owners place their dogs in a home that is best for that dog. Our first quest is to educate others correctly about this fabulous breed and also to protect and advance the interests of French Bulldogs.

Chicago French Bulldog Rescue (CFBR) was launched to protect French Bulldogs from neglect, abuse, loss of family and theft. We rescue them from animal shelters and puppy mills. We help families and individuals that can no longer care for their Frenchies. We are shepherds of the breed working to educate about French Bulldogs and most importantly, placing rescued Frenchies into loving homes.

Koko the Italian Greyhound
Koko the Italian Greyhound

Italian Greyhound Rescue

IG Rescue is a service provided for Italian Greyhounds that have been abandoned at animal shelters, taken from abusive homes or surrendered to Rescue due to the death or divorce of the former owner. Occasionally, dogs are turned over to Rescue because the owner can no longer keep the dog and the dog was acquired from a source to which it cannot be returned.

IG Rescue members foster these orphans in their homes, where their health and temperament are evaluated. All dogs are taken for a veterinary check-up: vaccinations are updated, the animal is neutered/spayed and, if necessary, its teeth are cleaned. Each Italian Greyhound is evaluated so that it can be placed in a home suitable to both the dog and new owners.

The American Maltese Association is the National AKC recognized parent breed club for Maltese. The AMA began a National Rescue Program for Maltese in 1995. Volunteers that support our breed rescue program consist of both members and non-members who share a love for the breed and a commitment to ensure unwanted, homeless Maltese are placed in warm, loving homes. In addition to adoption and foster services, we can provide assistance and recommendations to Maltese owners. In many cases we can assist with behavioral problems that might have otherwise turned into a future homeless situation.

Manchester Terrier Rescue

Our rescue group is part of the American Manchester Terrier Club. We take in purebred Manchester Terriers that are abandoned in shelters or surrendered by their owners. We provide medical care such as vaccinations, worming, heartworm testing and altering for each dog. Each dog is placed in a loving foster home, evaluated and started on training if needed. We then place them into new homes based on the suitability of the home and the dog.

Spike the Miniature Pinscher
Spike the Miniature Pinscher

Jester the Papillon
Jester the Papillon

Papillon Rescue

Papillon Care and Rescue Trust (PCART) accepts purebred papillons regardless of age, health or temperament. Our job is to ensure that all members of our beloved breed are able to live out their lives in a stable, healthful and loving environment.

Each rescued papillon is treated with special care. They are evaluated by a veterinarian for common health issues, given required medical care and spayed or neutered. Our foster care system is one of our greatest assets. When our papillons are cared for in a loving home environment by experienced volunteers we are better able to evaluate temperament and special needs. Great care is taken in determining the type of "forever" home that would suit each best.

They also come from owners who can't give them the care they need.

Silky Terrier Rescue

At Silky Terrier Rescue, we list all of the silky terriers that we know about who are in need of homes. These silkys might be in a shelter, in the Silky Terrier Club of America Rescue program, or in another rescue program.

Abbi the Toy Fox Terrier
Abbi the Toy Fox Terrier

Toy Fox Terrier Rescue

There will always be a need to find good homes for Toy Fox Terriers. Not all of these dogs will be rescued from a shelter or an abusive situation. Most of the time it is simply a matter of finding a home when the present owner cannot continue to keep the dog.

Rescue is an undertaking that can only succeed with everyone's participation. Surely we all want the same thing for these little dogs that we love so much.

Thanks for raising awareness about this. People are always surprised when I tell them my Maltese is adopted from a shelter. They don't realize that there are a lot of little dogs out there who need homes.

Both of my girls were rescued. With approximately 70-80% of all unwanted pets placed in shelters being put down, I just don't see how I could do anything else. All dogs should be loved.
