Automatic Dog Food Dispenser

Automatic Dog Food Dispenser

While there are several reasons to purchase an automatic dog food dispenser, one of the most beneficial reasons is that they can ensure that your dog is fed regularly and consistently regardless of your schedule, making your life easier and your dog happier. There are two basic kinds of automatic food dispensers - electronic ones that dispense a fixed amount of food at scheduled intervals and "low-tech" automatic dog food feeders that replenish themselves as your dog eats, keeping a constant supply of food available to your pet. To determine which of these types will work best for your household, it will depend on whether you ordinarily feed portioned meals or free feed.

Selecting an Automatic Dog Food Dispenser

In our household, we like to feed our dogs at about 6:30 p.m., but if we go out or work late, they end up not being fed until we return home, whenever that may be. An automatic dog feeder with timer solves that problem by dispensing a set amount of food at a set time.

The automatic dog food dispensers shown below differ in fairly significant ways. The bin type automatic feeders can hold multiple servings of food and be programmed to dispense a specific serving of food one or multiple times per day. Another style of food dispenser has chambers with lids that are filled daily; the lids open at programmed intervals. This type works with canned food as well as dry, if your dog is accustomed to eating canned food.

The Petmate Le Bistro Portion-Control Automatic Pet Feeder can simplify your life by feeding your pet, leaving you more time to interact with your dog.

It can be programmed to dispense up to 3 meals per day each ranging from 1/4 to 3 cups of dry food per serving. It is available with either a 5 or 10 pound food hopper that is clear so that you can easily see how much food is remaining. The food bowl is removable making it easy to clean.

Which Automatic Pet Food Dispenser is Best for Your Dog?

This type of automatic pet food dispenser stores dog food in a sizable bin that dispenses food into the feeding bowl as your pet eats it, providing a constant supply of food (at least until the bin empties). This style of pet food dispenser works best for dogs that are accustomed to being free fed. They come in a variety of sizes and should be selected with the size of your dog in mind.

Looking for an Automatic Dog Feeder with Timer?

Having a timer built into your automatic dog feeder simplifies life and keeps your dog healthier because it allows you to schedule your dog's feedings times consistently and regularly, keeping his digestive system in balance. If you need to feed your dog smaller, more frequent meals, look for an automatic dog feeder that can be programmed to dispense food multiple times in a day.

Need an Automatic Dog Feeder for Large Dogs?

Large dogs present a whole other challenge by virtue of the sheer quantity of food they consume as opposed to smaller dogs. An automatic dog feeder for large dogs must be able to not only have more pet food storage capabiility, but also be able to dispense larger portions. The automatic dog food feeders shown below are suitable to use for feeding larger sized dogs. Some electronically dispense the food in controlled portions and others replenish the food as it is eaten.
