Does Your Cat Need A Treatment For Fleas?

If like me you are a cat lover then the last thing you would ever want to see is your cat in any pain. Fleas and especially those that get on to our cats are truly annoying. Not only that they can often be hard to see and detect. The average cat flea size is just 1-2 mm long and as you know that is very tiny indeed.

Nevertheless they are blood suckers and left unattended they can breed very quickly indeed. The full name for these horrible things is Ctenocephalides felis and I think the worst thing about them is that they carry tapeworm. Your cat can become infected easily if they eat these fleas when going through their normal grooming rituals.

For small kittens this can actually lead to serious illness and even premature death.

Now most humans are not impacted by these fleas thankfully. However some humans have sensitive skin and it can certainly trouble them.

How To Know If Your Cat Has Fleas?

The Warning Signs

Cats are very good at staying clean and grooming. Ordinarily that would be classed as a very good thing. However when it comes to fleas, it makes it much more difficult for the owner to find them. As and when cats come across these fleas they will by instinct find them and eat them.

One strong sign to look out for though is if your cat is scratching more than usual. If your cat is like mine she likes to wind and move herself around my ankles. If your cat has an infestation of fleas, it is likely that these will transfer on to your legs and a small rash may appear. That is something you should look out for.

A flea comb is probably the best way to find out quickly if your cat has fleas. The teeth on flea combs are very thin and very close together. By combing your cat carefully and all over you will know for certain. Always do this over a few sheets of plain white paper as then you will be able to see any fleas falling out that do exist. Personally I use a few sheets of kitchen roll for this placed on a tiled floor which I disinfect afterwards.

You should also be able to see any excrement from fleas which is usually the blood they have sucked from your cat. I agree it is not a pleasant task, but in my opinion, a necessary one.

Buying A Quality Flea Comb

Like anything else you need to pick the right comb for your pussy. Some people will have long hair cats and that needs a different type and style of comb.

Irrespective of that I have found that the most effective flea combs have always got a double row of teeth and this works much better than just a single row. I have recommended a few below that will help make this unpleasant task a more efficient and quicker task to complete.

Flea Combs

Sensible price and a very good quality flea comb that does the job quickly and effectively.

The two rows of teeth is what truly makes the difference.

So What Cat Flea Treatments Are Available?

So Many and So Confusing

This was the hardest part of this article for me to write. I like to normally keep things nice and simple. However when it comes to cat flea there are a whole myriad of treatments available. You can buy many of these at pet stores, supermarkets and also at the vets. The real issue is which do you buy and why.

The information I did manage to find was that many of the old-fashioned treatments that still exist and do work, can actually be a bit tough on your cat. They are basically insecticides that you spray on to your cat and it can impact their skin. For certain they will wipe out any loitering fleas but it is a harsher treatment than is actually necessary. That said it is also highly effective especially if there are a lot of fleas.

Sometimes pet owners think that a cat is exactly the same as a dog. Now I know that is a crazy thing to say. The reason I mention this is that when it comes to flea treatment, some owners believe that if they also have dogs, then the same treatments can be used. That is a huge mistake to make.

Cats are much more sensitive to any type of insect killer than a dog would be. Never use the same treatments as it is worth spending the money to get the appropriate treatment for your own cat. That is not just my advice but it is also the advice of all vets.

Here is one small example. Some dog treatments have an ingredient called permethrin and if used on cats or kittens it could actually kill them. I was shocked when I found this out and yet it happens more often than I care to think about. It is always much better to be safe than be sorry, and buy the appropriate flea killer designed for different animals.

The best way to check this is simple to read the information about the product before buying it.

Top Rated Cat Flea Products

These can come in the following formats:

  • Collars
  • Tablets
  • Drops
  • Dab on
  • Powders

Personally I avoid powders simply because of the fact that cats naturally groom and as such will lick themselves and take on some of the powder. If you are in any doubt whatsoever always contact a vet. I tend to stick with the safer options which are just as effective.

Drops are my preferred solution and many cat owners would share this opinion.
