Although this story is a work of fiction, the theme is relevant to anyone with a family. The Art of Racing in the Rain is a story about one family and their struggles to cope with unavoidable hardships. What’s unique about this tale, is that it’s told through the eyes of a dog. As a dog lover, I find the viewpoints of the canine narrator to be interesting and believable. This is one of my favorite books of all time, I highly recommend it!

The Art of Racing in the Rain on Amazon

This book teaches new dog owners what NOT to do when you get a new dog. Through the author and her family’s’ trials and errors, we learn about how getting a dog is a huge commitment. The main plot point in the story is that their dog gets lost, and when Huck goes missing the family goes through every dog owner’s worst nightmare. It’s a suspenseful story with a happy ending. (Don’t worry, I didn’t spoil anything! The author doesn’t keep it a secret that they find their dog in the end).

OK I cheated a little on this one, this book isn't about a real dog but I still couldn’t leave this great book off of my list. A dog’s life: Autobiography of a Stray is a young adult novel by the author of the Babysitter’s Club series of books. Although it’s not about a real dog, it’s still a wonderful story. If you know a young reader who loves dogs, or just want to read a quick tale, this book is a sweet treat.

Oogy is the story of a dog that lived a life of abuse, before finding a loving family that took him in and gave him a home. After being used in a dogfighting ring, Oogy was rescued and eventually ended up with the Levin family. He was not a pretty sight: he was missing one ear and had a face and body covered in scars. The Levin family demonstrates that with patience, even an abused dog will make a great pet when given the chance.

Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson is one of my favorite animal authors. This book is about the relationship between humans and dogs dating back 40,000 years. He examines how we need dogs and much as they need us. Moussaieff Masson is known for writing amazing stories about animals, blending facts together with true accounts. He is the author of several popular animal advocacy books including: The Pig Who Sang to the Moon and When Elephants Weep. Reading his books are always a memorable experience! If you are familiar with his work, I highly recommend this book.
