My dogs love these treats in Carob flavor, but I've also made them in Carrot, Apple, Parmesan cheese, Liver, Chicken, and just about anything else I can think of. As long as the texture's right - the treats come out fine!
Dog Treats - Carob Version
1 cup carob chips
2 cups flour
1 cup powdered milk
1 tbsp vegetable oil
a little water
Preheat oven to 315°. Spray 2 large cookie sheets with vegetable oil spray. In a food processor, grind the carob chips to a fairly fine consistency. Add flour and powdered milk, process just to mix. Add egg, oil and a little water. Process to a pizza dough-like ball (holds together but is not too sticky) by adding water a little at a time. Don't let the mixture get too wet or the treats will puff up. Gather the dough into a ball and place on a cookie sheet. Split into 2, and reserve one ball. Press into a disk. Sprinkle with flour to prevent sticking. Roll dough until it's about 1/8 inch thick. Using a pizza cutter, cut into 1/4 to 1/2 inch squares. Repeat with other dough ball.
Bake for 30 - 40 minutes, rotating cookie sheets and switching positions halfway through. When finished baking, the edge treats will begin to separate - they may not be totally hard. Remove from oven. Cool for about 10 minutes. Crack into individual treats. If necessary, put sheets back in oven (you may want to consolidate onto one pan) with oven turned off. Let the treats crisp overnight.

The best recipes from Your Pet Chef for raw or cooked dog food
Author Lisa Hennessy is amazingly knowledgeable about dog nutrition and her clear instructions make it easy for anyone to produce top-quality raw or cooked complete meals for their dogs. Full disclosure - she is a friend and my dogs have been "guinea pigs" for the recipes and their pictures are featured in the book.
While circumstances have forced Lisa to stop production of dog food, all our dogs can still reap the benefits of her research by following her recipes and letting our dogs eat the best diet available.
