Cat Name Controversy

Use a People Name or Go with a Descriptive Name

Many people (including my wife) prefer a "people" name for their cat, while I have always preferred a more descriptive name. The choice is yours of course and in most cases your cat or kitten won't mind one bit!

In naming your cat however, it's always best to consider its coloration and character traits. No self-respecting cat ever wants a "lame" name, so take a little time and consider your cat's name well, before making your choice.

I will start my cat name list with some interesting "people names" first. With people names, anything goes, with some folks preferring an odd or eccentric name, while others are more "down to earth."

For the Eccentric Tomcat:

Hobbes (from Calvin & Hobbes) - My son's cat

Severus (as in Severus Snape from Harry Potter)

Lionel (from Latin meaning Lion)

Quentin (from Latin meaning 5th)

Abraxas (from Greek, mystical)

Odie (from English - woad Hill)

Bentley (from English - bent grass)

Reginald (from English - rule)

Beauregard (from English - beautiful view)

Baxter (from English - baker)

For the Lady of Leisure Cat

Beatrice (from French - bringer of joy)

Hermione (from Greek - pillar queen)

Gertrude (from German - strong spear)

Geraldine (from English - rules with a spear)

Clementine (from English - oh my darling)

Clothilde (from French - loud battle)

Bathsheba (from Hebrew - poor Solomon!)

Celeste (from Latin - heavenly)

Drucilla (from Italian - strong, mighty)

Minerva (from Latin - Goddess of wisdom)

For cats who have to work for a living!

For Country Toms

Hank - (from American - ruler of the home)

Jake - (from Hebrew - to replace by force or trickery)

Pete - (from English - rock)

Rufus - (from Latin - red hair)

Wade - (from the backwoods - hip deep)

Country Gals

Angel - (Greek - angelic)

Bambi - (Italian - child)

Candy - (American - sweeeeeeeeet)

Maddy - (French - from Madeline)

My Mother-in-Law has two siamese cats, a boy and a girl, and their name are: Nadir and Murli. I find these names quite nice.

Our first cat's name was Pixel (my husband was a computer programmer). His brother independently named their cat Pixel too (his brother and he look alike, and sound alike and have "engineering" minds...). Fun lens to read!

You've got a nice selection here. I don't think I've ever had much issue coming up with a name. It usually makes itself known to me after I've had the new critter in my life for awhile. My two barn cats are Lenobia and Buffy the bunny slayer. :)
