Betta Fish Make A Great Family Pet Hobby

Updated on September 25, 2011

The Straight Facts On Betta Fish Ownership

Also known as "rumble fish", The Siamese Fighting Fish, (Betta Splendens), or more commonly known in America as Betta, is a popular choice for home fish ownership. Very native to the rice paddies of Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia, the Betta lives about 2 to 5 years in captivity, but can exceed more than 7 to 9 years.

In the wild, the Betta mainly feed on the larvae of surrounding insects, such as mosquitoes, crickets and grasshoppers. More domesticated diets might include mashed shrimp meal, brine shrimp, blood worms, wheat flour, vitamins and fish meal, but a rounded diet is proven to prolong the life of a household Betta. Mixing in some more live bait into their diet should round them out, just not too much.

One of the most glorious thing about Betta ownership is admiring their bold, brilliant colors. Some well thought out breeding has produced some amazing coloring in Betta fish, but it should be noted that wild Betta only show natural colors when agitated, and display their native grayish tone typically.

The bred versions are fine to own and breed, it should be noted. Bright and unique Bettas from the store are simply the product of fish breed technology.

Male splendens, when in captivity should be kept alone as their nature dictates, they'll try to kill, or be killed by any other male in the vicinity. Additionally, if they're tanked with a female, the male Betta could harass the female into continuous spawning.

Female Bettas can be housed together in small groups and seem happier when done so. Both fish have been housed together with other fish species and can thrive. Sometimes though, the males will nip at the other fish, so a durable species of tank mate is advised.

The ideal tank environment for a fully grown Betta fish should be 2.5 gallons of water per fish, as to promote proper growth and vigor. If a continued hobby of raising Betta fish is desired, then a larger tank is advised, as opposed to the small fish bowls that are being marketed these days. A healthy Betta will not only thrive in ample, well thought out living conditions, but create a lasting legacy of beautiful Siamese Fighting Fish to be enjoyed.

Many families and individuals have grown very fond of their Betta fish hobby. Elaborate equipment and high cost are necessary when starting out with Bettas. A simple bowl, a new fish and a desire to learn about Bettas is the only requirement.

@Surfer83: Bettas are tropical, the *can* survive in small accommodations or in an open top tank or bowl, but but they are far form an 'easy' fish.

We called it fighting fish and they expand their tails when confronted by other same species. I think that only goes for the male.

Easy and simple to take care.

Very interesting story. Thank you for sharing
