Pet Names and Meanings

Updated on November 3, 2012

Looking For A Name For Your Pet?

Are you looking to name your pet? Want to give it a name with meaning. Here you will find tons of pet names and their meaning. We know how hard it is to find the perfect name for your pet especially if you are nervous about giving it a bad one. Don't worry about it too much and find the name that fits your pet the best.

Learn more about pets and their names here at http://www.niftypetnames.com.

Pet Names and Meanings

Imagine, for a moment, a nameless cat. Now: imagine calling it to you. Imagine its personality. Describe to us, in the clearest words that you can, who this cat is and why you care about her or him.

By now, one of two things has happened: either you've invented a cat of complex character or you are still back at square one, scratching your head and wondering how do I imagine a cat I don't even know? We at Niftypetnames.com have asked ourselves the same thing. Given a nameless cat, how on earth do we have any sort of idea who it is? The names of our cats and their meanings convey an instant message about the pet and the owner. If you've got a Tiger who is never home and ever hunting, the name alone explains his style. Maybe you've got a Tiny who is big enough to take on a Great Dane. Either you've got a sense of humor or your cat has a sense of inadequacy, tenderness or lethargy. Maybe you've got a Sekhmet, simba, Lion, Lola, Kitty or Killer - whoever your cat is, don't worry about nameless imagining. Browse our cat names and meanings. Laugh, cry, smile, or groan-whether accurate or ironic, put some identity on that feline.

A New Pet

This is a very exciting time to be picking a new pet name. You now have a new member of the family! I personally think it is almost as good as picking a name for a new child because you might be saying this name more often! It's fun to pick animal names because they can be creative and fun and not always based on actual normal names. So have fun and put your best creative foot forward in picking a pet name.

For those who have recently lost a pet, our condolences. We hope you the best and hope burial/pet urns for ashes went smoothly. Try http://www.peturnsforashes.com

When I was on my way to pick up a black cat the name Tabitha popped into my mind. It just seemed like the perfect name. When I looked up the name a while later I laughed when under the real meaning the author wrote "A good name for a cat." My boy came with his name, Neelix, and I took that as a good sign since I'm a fan of Star Trek.

I am the proud owner/ownee (not sure who owns who really) of seven amazing rescue bunnies. All of their names have come naturally after a about a week of getting to know them and they all fit perfectly. Although, grumpy Elliot, who thinks he's a person and refuses to go anywhere near the other buns and insists on sleeping in bed between my husband and I (this is really weird behavior for a rabbit) looks so much like the teeth-baring squidoo monster who gives out points, I'm tempted to rename him Squidoo Bun :o)

What a fun lens. I guess we should be as thoughtful about naming our pets as we are our kids. I never considered that there were meanings behind pet names. Hope I haven't unknowingly given any of my pets a complex or caused them needless teasing :) Thanks for a fun lens.
