Clothes and Sparkly things for the Cantankerous Chihuahua
What to wear, How to wear it, When to Wear It!
Chihuahuas are show-offs! Truly, they love attention. In fact, they are little divas! My Zoe loves to dress up. She seems to be the only 'fashionista' among her chi friends. Lucy doesn't dress up and doesn't seem comfy in any type of clothing. Zoe, however, is at home wearing a sweater, a cute Lulu dress or a hat. I started dressing her when she was still quite young. A word of advise to anyone who wants to see their little Mimi or Fido sporting that cute little 'sombrero' or hankie. Start them off young or they may not be comfortable wearing it. In fact, they'll tear it off with their little teeth. When it comes to accessories, it gets a little more complicated. Zoe wears a necklace only when I'm holding her in my lap or if she is in her carrier. A word of caution to small dog owners: You should never put anything around their neck if they're going to be loose in the backyard or around the house. Chihuahuas are fast runners and there is always the danger of a chain getting caught by a branch or entangled with something.
Chihuahuas tend to get cold during the months of October through March. Even in the mild weather in Florida if the temperature drops a little I see my little Zoe starting to shiver. That's when the sweaters and dresses come out of hiding. I dress her according to the weather. If it's not too cold - a dress will do just fine. If the air is a little nippy, then a sweater. On a trip to Wisconsin I packed her jacket, booties, scarf, and sweaters. My little granddaughter is so used to seeing Zoe wearing a dress or a sweater that one unusually hot day in December when I didn't dress Zoe, she remarked, "Grandma, Zoe is naked!"
Summer months are 'no dress-up' months for Zoe, especially in the Florida heat. I also avoid dressing Zoe when I take her for a walk (even in December). If the morning air is nippy she may start off our walk with a sweater, but somewhere along the way, the sweater comes off. Zoe loves to run and chase after squirrels or lizards. She tends to get overheated (being long-haired) when exercising.
All in all, Chihuahuas are great little dogs who love to be pampered and dressed up. Enjoy them!
