Elephants are highly intelligent and social animals as you'll see. Babies are doted upon not only by their elephant moms, but by other females too; grandmothers, aunts, and younger females who have not yet given birth. In many ways, they mirror human families. And such SWEET animals, too! Know someone who's been down lately? Or recovering from an illness? Perhaps still in the hospital? Send this link to anyone who needs cheering up. The Wooly Mammoth
Using DNA extracted from the remains of Wooly Mammoths long-buried, but well preserved, in the Siberian permafrost, scientists have been able to piece together a family tree which shows a somewhat closer connection between Mammoths and Asian Elephants than with the African variety, though all are indeed related. Mammoths and the African variety are thought to have diverged about 6 million years ago. But the Asian branch split from the ancient species a mere 5 million 6 hundred thousand years ago; a "blink of an eye in geologic time" as National Geographic puts it.
A fullgrown male Mammoth would've stood almost 11 feet tall at the shoulder and weighed about 6 tons with tusks about 7 feet long. It's estimated he would've consumed about 300 lbs of vegetation per day. Mammoths became extinct, about 10,000 years ago, it is thought, as a result of hunting by Man, disease, climatic changes, or a combination of these factors.
