Dobby, the Abused and Homeless Dog and Dog Rescue Story

Updated on September 14, 2014

Homeless Dog

Every considered adopting an abused dog? Sadly, many owners mistreat their dogs by physically and verbally abusing them. Some are lucky enough to get rescued and find homes, while others spend their entire lives under the hands of abuse.

See this little guy here? He was abused and homeless when he came into our lives. This is his story and how he went from almost being killed, to finding his forever family.

Rescuing a Dog

I couldn't understand why my daughter was so adamant about getting a ride home from her friend's house instead of me picking her up, especially since I was driving by there anyway while running errands. I was soon to find out.

Shortly after I arrived home, my youngest daughter started calling out, "Mama! Come outside. You've got to see this!" Image my surprise when I walked outside to find a small, trembling dog lying down next to my oldest daughter.

It was sad enough to see him trembling out of fear so badly, but even worse when I got closer and saw all the scrapes and scabs all over his body. Apparently someone had tried to shave him incorrectly. Tears filled my eyes as I looked upon this helpless little guy. I quickly called the vet to get advice on how to treat the wounds.

We learned that the previous owner was planning to kill him as she was quite upset with his behavior. An acquaintance of the owner volunteered to take him and find him a new home. He stayed at house after house for a short period of time before finding my daughter.

At each new place he stayed, the people couldn't keep him for one reason or another. Plans were being made to take him to the pound. Being that our family loves animals and have done rescue the work in the past, my daughter volunteered to take him home. That is how Dobby came into our lives.

Dog Rescue Story

One of my biggest concerns was how he would fit in with the other animals. I worried our dog would be jealous or that the cats would go after him. Fortunately, none of my fears came into play. It was as if he was always meant to be here. In fact, one of our cats has become quite infatuated with him.

It's been a few weeks and the physical signs of abuse are all but gone now. We're guessing he was hit a lot because if we approach our hands too quickly to pet him, he still cowers, although this has improved quite a bit since we got him.

We were thrilled to find out that overall, he's quite a healthy dog. It's also such a blessing that he went from a trembling scared dog to quite a happy dog. He's always keeping us company and waging his tail. We also have cats and all of the cats have accepted him and love him. He's a wonderful addition to our family,

Family Dog Rescue

You may have wondered about the name Dobby. No, it isn't his original name. We wanted to give him a new name to go with his new start in life.

For any of you who are familiar with Harry Potter, Dobby is a character who had been badly abused by his owner. That is until Harry Potter came along and set him free. That is how our Dobby got his name. He took to it immediately and never looked back.

How anyone could have hurt this little guy is beyond me. He's just the sweetest dog who does great with kids and other children. At first, he would only go around my daughter and was quite scared of my husband. That's all been changing. He now has given the rest of us a chance and has come to love us.

Dobby's story has a happy ending. Sadly, not all abused dogs are as lucky as he is. If you're thinking about getting a dog, consider adopting one from a shelter or rescue group. There are so many loving dogs that just need a second chance in life. We're so glad we decided to keep Dobby. He's become a wonderful addition to our family.

@sue826 lm: It breaks my heart to think that shy dogs are put down. Some of them are shy due to the abuse they have had. Bless you for the work that you do.

Shelter dogs. I volunteer with shelter dogs 5 days a week. It's so inspiring to see people like yourself rescuing dogs and keeping them from a lousy home or being surrendered to the shelter. At our shelter, shy dogs are in danger of being put down. That is starting to change and once identified, volunteers work with these poor animals. Thank you for adopting this beautiful dog!

I love all animals really. I would say dogs are my favorite. After both of our dogs passed away last year I didn't want to get another one very soon after that. We lost both 7 months apart so that was really hard. Jericho has been gone a year now here in just a few days and the other one was named Ak has been 6 months next month. We are thinking of a rescue dog this spring, I want to save them all. :)

As soon as I started to rad this I was fighting back teas. How CAN people hurt a little dog like that! Thank you for showing him how life should be (and good on your daughter for presenting a fait accompli that she knew you wouldn't be able to resist!.)
