Many dog owners have already encountered with an unpleasant odor, which is passed through the buttocks of your dog. Dog farts! Dog gas is one of the most unpleasant odors. Farting dog in your living room is almost impossible to ignore!

Any dog can have problems with the flatulence - just as we can. And when the dog feels excessive accumulation of gas in the rectum, he gets rid of them in the same way as we do. Dog farts. With another word, dog has gas. Or to express that more scientific, dog has flatulence. It's not always just "blame it on a dog".

How Dog Farts Are Generated

Farts are generated by excessive accumulation (formation) gas in the digestive tract. These gases can:

- come from swallowed air,

- arise during biochemical processes of digestion in the gastrointestinal tract,

- could enter intestine through diffusion from the circulation, or

- be produced by bacteria that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract.

Well, it is evident that there are numerous sources, from which dog gas can arise. In fact, the vast majority of the winds, which breeze from the anus of our pets, we don't even notice. Smelly is only that part of gases, which contain hydrogen sulfide and other 'aromatic' compounds.

Is Farting in Dogs Normal?

So, farting is normal biological function. You'd be surprised if you knew how much air dog swallows during feeding, and if he doesn't eliminate it with burps, this air has to leave the body at the other end of the digestive tract. The amount of swallowed air is strongly increased when a dog eats quickly. Lots of air is swallowed by short-muzzled or flat-faced dogs that often breathe through their mouth rather than through the nose. Dog gas that originates from swallowed air only, doesn't seem to have too much unpleasant odor.

Really smelly farts are result of bacterial action in the colon. Plant fiber in food is indigestible for pets enzyme system, but is digestible for intestinal bacteria. And the bacterial digestion of fiber is producing gases. Foods containing excessive amounts of fiber promote proliferation of the types of bacteria that digest fiber. And the more of these bacteria mean more smelly gas. Such "fartogenic" foods are broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, beans and peas.

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:

These Work Great! August 1, 2012, By April Stevens

I've had a few dogs during my life, but none like good ol' Oscar. We love Oscar, but his farts are down right room clearing. We started giving him these pills and after 2 weeks there was a significant reduction in his farts (I'm talking 90+%). Another reason I know they work is after a month or so, I forgot how bad his farts could be and stopped giving them to him. Within a week, he went back to randomly clearing the living room 3 or 4 times a day with his farts. Needless to say, he's now back on the pills for life. He weighs about 60 lbs and I give him 3-4 in the morning. Since he's been back on I haven't smelled any deadly farts.

How to Stop Dog From Excessive Farting - What Can We Do

As mentioned before, the formation of gas and farting is a natural part of digestion. However, some dogs do fart more than others. And being around such dogs is not the most pleasant situation. But don't worry; there is solution also for that smelly problem. There are some simple steps which ensure that for dog is less likely to release something "aromatic".

First and foremost we need to reduce the excretion of gas. First step is that we have take care that the dog eats his meal more slowly. We know that when dog eats too quickly he also ingests more air.

To slow down swallowing food we should put in dog's bowl some obstacles - large objects that dog cannot take them in the mouth. For this purpose we can use tennis balls for small dogs, but something bigger and heavier for large dogs (larger stones are also suitable). It also works smaller bowl, turned upside down and placed into a larger bowl with food. If there are more dogs in the household they should be fed separately as this prevents competition for food. If you fed dry, kibbled food, you can strew it on larger area, so the dog can only gradually pick it up.

After the meal take your dog to gentle walk, which will help facilitate digestion and elimination of gases. If the dog during a walk obeys the call of nature, even better. However, don't permit rapid running and jumping after a meal, as your dog can experience gastric dilatation, maybe even accompanied with gastric torsion. Large and deep-chested dogs are especially prone to this life-threatening condition.

Change of food can also be helpful. Some brands of food can cause excessive release of gas, so you have to choose food from the highest quality range, which is more digestible and produces significantly less gas. Highly digestible food is digested at great extent and nutrients are absorbed from it into the bloodstream before they reach the colon, where live gas-forming bacteria. This means that these bacteria get fewer nutrients and consequently there is less gas production.

Sometimes it is necessary to keep the dog on some excellent digestible diet (such as the gastrointestinal diets) till the farting condition calms down. Then you can switch on feeding some other highly digestible regular food. Of course food change should be done gradually, over a week or 10 days. The first day you should mix small part of a new brand of food with the old food, somewhat in the ratio 1:4. Over the course of one week to 10 days gradually increase the portion of new food, until you completely change your pets food.

You can give your dog products with probiotic bacteria, which will overgrow the gas-forming bacteria. You can give also probiotic yoghurts, but significantly better results are with special products containing a much higher concentration of probiotic bacteria.

However, you should monitor what your pet eats. More gas is produced when dog is eating garbage or rotten food and also table scraps. The formation of gas is accelerated with big meals, so you rather feed your dog several times a day with smaller meals.

I've got two dogs that are about the same size and eat the same diet. The one that scarves its food down in world record time is the one that always ends up floating doggie air biscuits.
