Frozen Vegetarian Puppy Pops

Updated on August 10, 2013

February is National Pet Dental Health Month

National Pet Dental Health Month is in February. However, you should always ensure good dental health for your dogs.

With good dental health, you do not have to avoid treats that are tasty to your dog. Pup-alicious Puppy Pops are easy to make and are healthy for your pooch.

When I was young, we used to raise dogs. I don't remember ever brushing their teeth or doing anything with dental health. This is probably because it was so expensive.

Today, we are more aware of health issues and what certain things can do to us or our pets. Neglecting your pet's dental health is not optimal. They can suffer and some dental illnesses can cause their death.

This website is dedicated to a tasty treat that we can give our precious pooches and also ensuring good dental health.

Please enjoy this little journey and if your dog desires, put him on your lap while you peruse.

I have a rescued dog and realized a while ago that I started creating a monster soon after I adopted her about 12 years ago.

She is not vicious or mean at all. However she loves people food and now will no longer eat her own food until all smells of other food are gone from the house or until she no longer sees anyone eating.

She loves fruits and vegetables and she learned long ago that when I pull out the Vitamix, all she needs to do is wait by her bowl as I put all the scraps there.

Carrots are her favorites and she also loves apples. The Veterinarian said that celery is also good for dogs but she won't touch it. He also said that carrots and apples are good for the teeth but that the pulp will stick to the teeth and will cause decay and gum issues.

With this in mind, I created the idea of Puppy Pops. I had an old Popsicle container with the plastic sticks that I no longer used and I got started. The recipe is below and since all of the items are either juiced, or in my case, pulverized, they don't stick to the teeth. I can also get her to eat celery this way as the apple and carrots are masked.

I freeze these up and let her lick them off the sticks while I am holding them. It is a great way to connect with your dog and also keep her from chewing up the holders. The first time or two, you will need to train them and ensure you are holding the pop tightly so your dog will not grab it out of your hand.

I hope you enjoy this website. The dogs below want to let you know what they think of dental health.

Thank you for visiting.

Doggy Dental Health Tips - What can you do?

  1. If your dog has "rotten" or very foul smelling breath, it could be a sign that there are dental problems. Make an appointment with your Veterinarian
  2. If your dog allows, check his teeth and gums once a week. Your dog should not have white or red gums (only pink) and there should not be tartar buildup on the teeth.
  3. Get your dog's teeth cleaned by your Vet or a pet dental professional about as often as you do yours. A good recommendation is once every six months.
  4. Put an oral additive to the pet's water. Dogs cannot detect that it is there. This will help cut down on tarter.
  5. Brush your dog's teeth using a pet toothbrush or a soft gauze cloth wrapped around your fingers. Never use toothpaste or substances not made for dogs.
  6. Learn about the different mouth disorders your dog could have. If it doesn't look natural, it probably isn't.
  7. Chew toys are great for dogs as they help clean their teeth!
  8. Give your dog rawhide treats. These not only keep them busy, they clean teeth when nothing else works.
  9. Do not feed your dog anything that is sugary that can get stuck to their teeth. It is always better to juice fruits and vegetables or make "Puppy Pops."
  10. Use special food that is formulated to prevent tarter buildup. Most Vets can recommend certain brands if you just call their office.
