Dog Toys Without Squeakers
Does your dog hate toys with squeakers? Mine sure does.
Whenever I visit the pet store, I stop by the stuffed toy racks and squeeze a few to see if I can find one without the evil squeaker.
You see, my dog, Sydney, loves soft stuffed toys and carries them around in her mouth all the time. She likes to greet us or our visitors at the door with something in her mouth, usually whatever she can quickly find. Because we prefer her to bring us toys rather than dirty socks or other unmentionables, we have always kept a large stash of toys around the house so they are handy and easy for her to find. The problem is that she HATES squeakers so we have difficulty finding stuffed toys without them. So much so that we have had to resort to buying regular stuffed animals on occasion to keep her supplied. This can be a bad idea because regular stuffed animals are not made with dog safety in mind and often have hard glass/plastic eyes that could be a choking hazard.
Sydney happens to be fairly gentle with her toys and has a couple that are over 10 years old so it has worked for us so far but I am always on the lookout for actual dog toys without squeakers. Here you can see her sleeping with her beloved floppy eared bunny. I call it Frankenbunny because he has been repaired more times than I can count.
I have been on an internet hunt for squeaker-free dog toys so I thought I would share what I have found for those of you also struggling to buy toys that your pet will enjoy playing with.
These toys have removable squeakers...
These are not technically squeaker free dog toys, but you can remove the squeaker and turn it into a toy that doesn't squeak.
Teddy Bear Plush Toy
KONG Teddy Bear Dog Toy
This teddy bear, like other toys from the Dr. Noy's Toys line, is not stuffed in the traditional fashion but instead has a pocket closed with velcro that holds a squeaker. These toys are really designed for people wanting to be able to *replace* the squeaker but it also allows the owner to remove the squeaker entirely. They are flat and floppy, perfect for shaking around. They are not durable, however, so they are best for carriers and shakers like Syd, not those that like to disembowel their stuffies, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The bear comes in three sizes, XS, Small and Medium.
Squeaker Free Beaver Dog Toy
Beaver Dog Toy
This toy is made by Kong and is designed the same way as the one above and has a pouch with a removable squeaker. The beaver comes in two sizes, small and large. The tail allows for exciting shaking action if your pooch likes to whack him/herself in the head.
This is also a great toy for a dog that is an Oregon Ducks fan! Even if their team isn't doing well on the field or court, they can take out their frustrations on this helpless beaver.
Tuffy Brand Durable No-Squeak Toys
These toys are built to last!
The toys shown below are part of the Tuffy Dog Toy series of durable dog toys. They are constructed from multiple layers of fabric and stitched multiple times to increase durability and tear resistance. If your dog enjoys destroying their plush toys, these are a good option. They are a bit more expensive, but are worth the money because they will last much longer than a standard plush dog toy. These toys float and are washable.
The toys in the top row are from the Barnyard Series and in addition to the ones shown below, there are several other animals that are made without squeakers: a bull, horse and turkey.
The second row shows toys from the Dinosaur Series. These toys are large scale, making them perfect for larger sized dogs. My favorite is the Triceratops! There is another squeak free toy from this series called the Destructosaurus that a giant stuffie.
If your dog wants to prove that he is the king of the jungle, there are four more Tuffy brand toys that are squeaker free from the zoo animals line: elephant, giraffe, tiger and toucan.
Please note: these are meant to be chewed and play time should always be supervised.
Tuffy's Sherman Sheep Dog Toy
Tuffy's Polly Pig Dog Toy
Tuffy Barnyard Series Molly the Mouse Toy White
Tuffy's T-Rex Dog Toy
Tuffy's Moosasaurus Dog Toy
Tuffy's Triceratops Dog Toy
Sydney playing with her stuffed (earless) bunny
This is one her favorite toys even though the ears are now gone. You can see how she likes to whip it back and forth, whacking herself in the head. Goofy girl!
These toys make some noise, but don't squeak!
This group of toys do make noise, but they don't squeak. My dog doesn't mind lower pitched noises, so she loves toys like these. The AKC Rabbit is one of her favorites - she has always had a thing for rabbits! Be sure that you purchase the larger sized Yeti toy because the small size does have a squeaker.
AKC American Classic Rabbit Large
GoDog Yeti Buster Dog Toy
Mallard Migrator Bird Plush Dog Toy
Booda Booda Bellies Dog Toys
These toys grunt instead of squeak and come in different sizes.
Does your dog like squeaky toys, but you don't?
Hear Doggy Blow Fish Dog Toy
This style of plush dog type is pretty amazing! There is a squeaker element, but it operates at an ultrasonic frequency that humans cannot hear, but dogs can. If your dog likes squeaky toys, but they drive *you* crazy, this solves that problem nicely.
They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit your pet. My favorite is the blowfish shown here and it is available in small and large sizes.
Frankenbunny before visiting the hospital...
Let's see. One ear completely detached. A rip down the front. Multiple wounds on the head. Eyes nowhere to be seen. Is there any hope for Frankenbunny?
A few more squeak free dog toy options...
Here are a few more toys that I was able to find that do not have squeakers or can be modified to be squeak free.
Plush Cat Tug Toy
This toy has a rattle inside rather than a squeaker. If your dog also likes to play tug, this is a nice option.
Kyjen Plush Puppies Bottle Buddies Squeaker Dog Toy
This type of toy is fun because you insert an empty water bottle that will crunch when your dog bites down on it! This particular brand was the only one that I found that can be squeak free. The squeaker is separate and is placed on top of the water bottle instead of inside the toy itself.
West Paw Design Wacky Worm Tug Toy for Dogs
This is another squeak free tug style of plush toy. It is made of sturdy corduroy and comes in orange (shown) and blue.
Frankenbunny has been given a new lease on life... - (you call this life??)
Good as new, right? Uh, sure. One ear is coming of the side of the neck and the head is shrunken and looks like those ones in the jungle.
Hey, it was the best I could do with what is left of the fabric on the head. You can see in the picture at the top of the lens how I tried to patch the head with fabric the next time he came in for repairs. The situation is becoming dire.
Happy to have her bunny back!
This is true love. Due to his delicate condition, I only bring him out occasionally and we play very carefully with him. But, when she sees him, she starts hopping around, ready to play like she is a puppy again (she just turned 13)!
Sydney asks: to squeak or not to squeak, that is the question...
Squeak or no squeak??
A few of Sydney's toys... - and yes, she has more than this. I know, I know.
A funny story...the M&M came in a mug that I received as a Christmas gift one year, and it has been a great toy. She tosses it up in the air by the hands and feet and it goes flying! It looks cute hanging out of her mouth too.
