Dog Crate Ideas -- Where to Find Cool Crates You Won't Need to Hide

Updated on December 30, 2010

Beyond the Basic Dog Crate--Options That Look Good in the House

A dog crate is an awesome training tool, and it can provide a cozy haven for your favorite pooch, but there are a lot of ugly crates out there.

Fortunately, with a little research, you can find some very cool crates that you won't feel the need to hide when guests come over!

Dog Crate Covers Are an Easy Update

A cover is an inexpensive way to improve the look of your existing dog crate

A lot of the cool dog crate options we'll look at involve buying a new crate or piece of furniture with a crate built in. But if you've got a perfectly functional crate already, it might not make sense to spend money on something brand new. What you may want to check into are dog crate covers.

These covers are just what they sound like: little fabric pieces that are designed to fit over a crate.

Some of the perks are that they can make a crate more attractive and less noticeable, and these covers can also make your canine buddy more comfortable. One of the reasons dogs can learn to be comfortable in crates is that they feel like they're in cozy little dens, just as dogs in the wilds would use. A cover enhances the den-like feeling by making it dark and sheltered inside for Fido.

Covers come in a number of fabrics and patterns. Choose solid if you want something inconspicuous, but if you want your dog crate to proudly stand out, have some fun. Animal prints, anyone?

Just make sure you measure your crate before you pick up a cover, as you'll want to ensure the one you order fits!

Below you'll find some dog crate covers that can be purchased at Amazon.

Examples of Dog Crate Covers - There are lots of dog crate cover styles available through Amazon

Consider a Dog Crate Made from Wood, Wicker, or Other Stylish Materials

Go beyond the classic metal crate for some great looks

When you're at the pet store, you may feel there are not many dog crates to choose from. Your store probably features plastic and metal. Not very exciting materials, and not something I particularly want sitting in my living room!

Fortunately, if you expand your search, you can find crates made from more attractive materials. You might even be able to find something that goes nicely with your existing furniture.

Wood and wicker are examples of different dog crate materials. Check the Amazon links below to see some stylish alternatives to those ugly metal crates:

Examples of Wicker Dog Crates - Pick up a wicker dog crate from Amazon

Dog Crates That Look Like Furniture

No need to disguise a dog crate that doubles as a table or other piece of furniture

Some of my favorite dog crates are the ones that look like classy pieces of furniture. The most common furniture crates double as side or bedside tables. Set your books, table lamps, and other knick knacks on top, and give Fido a cozy place to hang out below.

You can find these table dog crates in a variety of styles. There are very modern versions, and there are also classic wood models.

Some of these crates are so cleverly put together that guests won't even realize you've got a dog crate in the house unless Fido ambles into his hidden bed while visitors are over!

What a great idea. I keep a couple of dog crates in the basement for my cats to sleep in. I just cover them with blankets, but these covers look nice and tailored.

I'd no idea dog crates could be found that are really more like furniture. I bet the pooches who have these tricked out designer dog crates enjoy them as special canine nests.

      great Lens five stars *****

The other night Son five required my help in lifting A big crate. Huge.

He told me it was a dog transport basket. It took two of us to lift with out the Dog. I thought the said crate was for a horse rather than a dog.
