Teach your dog to walk on a dog treadmill!

Updated on September 26, 2014

Walking on a dog treadmill is great exercise for your dog!

When I got my last injury (an iliopsoas muscle pull) at an agility trial in January 2008, I had a lot of rehab to do to get back in shape for running agility again.

Mum helped me with lots of stretching and strengthening exercises, but she also taught me, a dog, how to walk on a treadmill to get additional exercise.

Even though I'm kind of scared of machines (like our Dyson and Mum's Sonicare toothbrush), the way she taught me helped me not be afraid of the treadmill.

Now I'm a treadmill walking machine and I love it!

Walking on a treadmill is great exercise for dogs, like in the dead of Winter when it's too cold for a walk, or during the extreme heat of Summer. It's no substitute for a nice long walk, run or hike, but comes in real handy when I need my exercise and can't get outside.

You can train your dog to walk on a human treadmill (or a dog treadmill), just like I do. It's sit back and learn how!

Teach your dog to walk on a treadmill!

Before Mum taught me to walk on our treadmill (it's a human treadmill) she got a few tips from friends and from various websites. Here is what she learned and utilized to help me learn...

  • Place the treadmill so the dog isn't walking into a wall (Very important! We quickly learned this from our first vid, and moved it pronto!).
  • Use clicker training if your pup is clicker trained.
  • Start by having the dog get up on the treadmill (without it running) to get used to being on the machine - and click, and treat!
  • Do this for however long it takes for your dog to be VERY interested in being on the treadmill.
  • Then, have your dog stand or sit near the treadmill, and turn it on.
  • Have your dog get used to the sound a few feet away from the treadmill, click and treat, and continue until the dog is comfortable.
  • Put your dog on a leash.
  • If your dog is light enough to pick up, I recommend starting the treadmill at a very slow speed, and them placing your pup onto the treadmill using a treat as a lure. If they are big dogs, have the dog stand on the treadmill as you turn it on at a very, very slow speed, also using a treat as a lure to have them walk forward. Praise them, praise them, praise them!
  • Your dog may be a bit frightened at first, but stay calm and say encouraging words.
  • Keep trying these steps until your pup is comfortable walking on the treadmill.
  • Stand next to your dog holding his/her leash taught in an upright position as they walk on the treadmill - simulating a walk alongside you.
  • If your dog is still uncomfortable, you may want to stand in front of the treadmill, holding their leash for them to be in the correct position, and use a treat as a lure to walk toward you.

Pretty soon, your pup will be a natural at walking on the treadmill. But please remember, always supervise your dog, and use a leash/harness to keep them centered on the tread for safety. And don't feed your dog one hour before or after rigorous exercise.

Mum has me walk at a pace of a good trot like you would see show dogs trot in a the competition ring. It's a good stride that you can see from the side, I am walking in my footprints.

Now that I'm used to it I walk on it about 20 minutes, two times a day, with a slow speed warm up and a slow speed cool down. Remember, I'm a working breed, so I am used to being very, very active. Have your dog walk on the treadmill from 5 to a maximum of 10 minute intervals to begin with, and increase the time very slowly, always watching them for any discomfort.

When your dog is finished walking on the treadmill, walk them around your house for a few minutes. Getting off a treadmill is very disorienting (you know how you feel when you get off the machine). Walking them around will help them get over their 'sea legs'!

Here are a few more tips:

  • Make sure your treadmill belt is the right length for your dog. For smaller dogs a human treadmill works just fine. But if you have a larger dog, like a Golden, you'll need a dog treadmill - the belts are longer and you need that to keep their stride natural.
  • To increase the difficulty for your dog and build more muscle, increase the incline on your treadmill. But make sure your dog can handle the extra 'load' and increase very gradually.
  • Don't have your dog walk on the treadmill at least one hour before or after a meal. Just like swimming, K?
  • Keep the treadmill clean from dog hair and drool. It's not good for the machine.
  • Make sure your dog's nails are clipped properly for their safety.
  • Have fun!

First of all, your dog is awesome, and second of all I've never seen a dog using a treadmill before, so this is pretty cool to see! I <3 dogs.

This would be great for dog owners! We tried putting our cat on the treadmill one time...he wasn't impressed. I would imagine it works much better for a dog.

We tried walking with our Maltese a few years ago! He didn't care for it too much, and was actually afraid of it. However, I also know someone else who absolutely LOVES to walk their dogs on their treadmill!

We actually tried turning on the treadmill with our cat once...he was not impressed! Walking your dog on a treadmill is great, though, especially for when the weather is bad.

This is a great exercise idea for dogs especially for my dogs! Since I tend to have many dogs at one time it is hard to give them all the exercise they need so this would be a great alternative if needed! Thanks for sharing!

I have a small house and they get to burn off the extra energy they build up, as well as it being better for them than being sedintary. Not to mention I live in Sunny Florida, so often times its just too, too hot for a long walk or its raining! Treadmills have been a godsend for me and my pups!

I unwittingly acquired a very high energy dog recently and had heard Cesar Millan recommend the treadmill to help drain the extra energy. I got on-line and bought a treadmill but was curious to know what the steps were to getting her on the treadmill and working her up to a reasonable workout. This website had the best step-by-step instructions and I've had good success with the early training so far. I'm very thankful that you've taken the time to help the rest of us out with this information.

@jadehorseshoe: We don't recommend tying the leash to the handbars on the treadmill, much too unsafe. You'll notice in my video that even though he's on leash, I am holding it the entire time for safety and control.

A calm cat is easier to teach than a frisky dog. Almost strangled the dog, when I tied a short leash to the handbars; he was not happy.

Loved your lens. Our German Shepherd used to hate the treadmill, now he is addicted to it! He looks so cute running on it and wagging his tail. We had some guests staying with us last year and they had never even considered the idea of a dog running on a treadmill! So they took lots of photos and apparently they showed them to everyone in their local gym!

      I think teaching a dog to walk on a tredmill is a great idea. Then he/she can get exercise even when it's raining or you don't feel well enough for a walk. It can really be helpful for dogs who's owner lives in a place that is not sutable for a good walk or run. Great page. Visit mine sometime;

This is one thing that every owner should be taught - how to make one's pet dog fit. Many don't even get outside with their dogs and letting your dog go overweight is tantamount to ill-treatment. Dogs need to exercise too, much like humans!

Even if your dog an injury does not mean that it is end of his career in exercising has to end. Treadmills are actually good for stretching muscles once again and making dogs able to do even light footwork. We must not be afraid to try out new technological innovations since they can help us improve your dogsâ health and body conditions as well.

@hodges2121: We are firm believers in crate training; a dog's crate is their safe place!!! But here are a couple of additional ideas: You can use bells on your outside door and teach them to ring the bell when they have to do their business.

Or you can work with clicker training (we love clicker training) to help your dog better understand they are doing the 'right' things! Here's a little vid:

Hope those ideas help! Keep us posted, K?

Hi, Johann! This is wonderful! I like to take my humans out for a walk at the park when the weather is nice, but would like them to use their treadmill when the weather is not so nice! I'll show this lens to my human mom so that I can learn how to use it. I'm sure they will want to get in shape, also, when they see that I can do it! :) Thanks! ~ Angel, the Golden Retriever

@anonymous: Thank you for your comments Justin, but I have to respectfully disagree. Through a wide variety of rehab activities, we do know the importance of warming up, and always start slowly on the treadmill, build up speed gradually, and then slow the treadmill down for a time for cool down. Then once off the treadmill walk around the house for further cool down, as we outlined in the recommendations above.

Nowhere do we mention to leash your dog to the treadmill and leave them. That would be extremely dangerous and we would never, ever recommend that. My Mum uses a leash on me FOR safety, while she is holding it and standing beside me the entire time I am on the equipment. She would never want me on a treadmill, harnessed or leashed or even unattended, without her having complete control for my safety with a leash.

This type of treadmill is very suitable for a small to medium sized dog, and you will notice above that we do recommend a dog treadmill for a larger dog because the tread is longer to accommodate them.

    • profile image

      anonymous 7 years ago

Attaching your dog to a motorized treadmill via a leash is extremely dangerous, it can easily result in breaking the dog's neck. Advertising this as a training method is beyond unwise, it's inhumane.

Dog's SHOULD NOT RUN ON A MOTORIZED TREADMILL. They should only being placed on carpet mill's, and attached via the proper harness (a dog specific mill will come with the appropriate harness), which will typically involve a body harness that is secured from a point directly above the dog to reduce horizontal strain.

In addition to this, keep in mind the effort we humans go to when running on a treadmill, we stretch before and after, we cool down slowly as to not cramp - all these are necessary when a dog exercises as well, and I highly suggest rubbing their muscles down after exercise to increase blood flow and reduce the chance of cramping.

Ever seen your dog tentatively lifting it's paw up after running around? That's a charlie horse, just like we get them, and they hurt. Don't cause you're dog pain when it can be easily avoided.

LOL @ give me some woofs :-P Very witty indeed hehe!

Your lens really indicates that you are very knowledgeable in canine rehabilitation, overall exercise, and health. There is tons of information here, the vids really help to explain how to get your dog on a treadmill. I agree completely that while there's no substitute for walking your dog outside, the next best thing is to walk them on a treadmill if the weather is bad. This releases a lot built up tensions and stress in your dog. Puts them in a calm submissive state (like Cesar says :-P). Great Lens, Kudos!

BTW very creative the way you wrote the beginning of the lens from the point of view of the dog :-D

[in reply to mitchking] Hi Mitch - you know that some dogs require much more exercise than some people can capably do with their dogs. Take me for example: I need at least four miles of walking a day, plus running around in the backyard and more. Some days it's just too much for my Mum. We don't think it's a substitute, just a good addition to a regular exercise program for your pup. Thanks!

    • profile image

      mitchking 7 years ago

I am sure this is great for making sure your dog gets to walk no matter what the weather. But when so many people do not get enough exercise maybe they should stick to walking the dog themselves.

Johann the Dog looks just like DeeDee, and her movements and behavior seem to be exact. They both have the little white tips on the back feet, the white spash on the chest, and the tiny white tip on the tail. Although DeeDee had small white socks on the front feet. [in reply to tristencutie90] You just have to take it super, super slow. I recommend clicker training to help you. This is what I would do, even though I admit I've only trained my own dogs. Start with you and your pup about four feet from the treadmill, click and treat. Move very gradually closer to the treadmill, clicking and treating over many days. Then move back to the four or more feet and turn the treadmill on, gradually move closer and closer till they are used to the noise. This may take a couple of weeks, working several times a day. Then turn off the treadmill and work with your dog on it without it being on. They have to really love being there before you even begin to turn it on and have your dog go on it.

Then do the steps I described about either picking up your down and gently placing him/her on it, or leash them up and make the treadmill go super slow. Try these and if it doesn't work - I would say that maybe it's not that important. Some dogs just can't handle.
