Dona - Our Rescued Labrador

Updated on February 28, 2013

Dona - Young Soul Inside An Old Body

Dona is a 14 years old "lady" dog; she is missing a tooth or two, can't hear very well and has rheumatism, but she is truly a young soul trapped inside an old body! Dona enjoys everyday walks in the park and cuddling sessions. She is stubborn, as old folks usually are :D

When she decides that she wants to be outside longer, she just sits and refuses to move. Well, I can be stubborn too, so we argue about that!

Dona's Update

Dona had another surgery last Friday and she is recovering slowly. For her age this is normal. You can help Dona and to other stray dogs and cats donating to the animal shelter. If you want to help Dona's helpers you can do that to the following link. This is a Croatian Animal shelter who take care of many strays from our area.

Someone else's pet

5 months ago, Dona was someone else's pet. That certain someone decided that she is old and sick and just let her out of the yard on the street with the idea that she's going to wonder around for a while and then die somewhere soon.

Dona, our lovely BaBa - Grandma in Croatian

dona swim
dona swim

A few months ago my wife got a call from her friend from the local animal shelter. She asked if we can take care of an old dog for a while, because the dog was recovering from surgery. Then we found out what really happened: when Dona was found, she had open cancer wounds on her breasts, big as melons. The volunteers took her to the vet and the owner was found immediately 'cause of the chip! When they contacted him, he said he will pay for the operation so no one can sue him for neglecting the animal but also that he is disowning her.

So, for my wife's birthday, Dona moved in with us :) ( I got a cool Vox amp, and I got her an old dog :D )

Recovering

dona playing
dona playing

Dona recovered quite fast from surgery and she is doing great. Considering her age, she is very cheerful and full of energy. Every morning she comes to our bedroom to wake us up, every day we watch her resting while she snores like a whale, every day we say "no!" when she makes her "cat from Shrek" face expression while we eat our lunch and then laugh like crazy!

Dona is showing us how her will for living is strong and how much she enjoys it! That makes me respect her so, so, so much! What we can do, is to help her to get old with dignity and in comfort. Thinking not about her sad past but about her good present.

Labrador - Sleeper - Love-Retriver

Even though she's a Labrador retriever, she doesn't retrieve anything but she makes me chase her around the kitchen table while she is "runs" away with her toy. She loves company; people, dogs and cats, and her main activity is - sleeping. Once in a while she also likes to embarrass us in public, with a quite loud fart, and her cuteness factor goes crazy if she sees us holding a piece of cheese!

I just met your wife over at 'Through The Lens - By Ninche' (Delightful story) and since she just 'happened' to mention you in her bio, I had to come meet the other half of the husband-wife Squidoo team from Croatia! And what better way to get acquainted with you and your writings than through your delightful Dona, the 'Baba'. :) (I'm a Baba too, so I can relate ---LOL).

I think rescue pets are wonderful. My brother & sister-in-law just adopted a rescue Boston Terrier puppy (now 9 months old). She's timid and sometimes frightened around strangers, so they are busy trying to 'socialize' her and get her past her fears. She adores them (and me!). She also lives with 4 cats now and is the same size they are, so we think she thinks she's a cat too. :) Welcome to Squidoo. Very nice to meet you, Nina and Dona!

We had the privilege to take on a 15-year-old cat (Harmony, the tabby, was a little miffed) named Clifford, after his owners decided he was too old and too much work. His legs were twisted with arthritis and he had to have been in continual pain. In spite of that, he was never anything but good natured and took enormous delight in teasing Harmony as much as he could. I think it helped him to live until he was 18-1/2 years old. Cliff was a great cat and we loved him a lot! Love your lens, too!!!
