Fancy Rat Care: A Lensography by Shandi S.G. Penrod

Updated on August 15, 2011

a collection of pages on the care of pet rats!

My husband and I have had pet rats since college and before we married. We love that they are so easy to take care of, are emotional and smart as a whip (like dogs), can be taught tricks, and love to see us when we come come.

I've created a collection of Squidoo lenses on the care of pet rats, including hairless rats, and I've assembled them here. Take a look and tell me what you like.

If you have an idea for another fancy rat topic leave me a message in the guestbook.

The Best Book on Pet Rat Care

My Rat (My Pet Series)
My Rat (My Pet Series)

This is the most informative and up-to-date book on rat care I've found--the one I'd recommend to rat owners if they could have only one. It's very thorough, written in an easy-to-read, entertaining fashion, and contains a plethora of color photographs.

My Rat is a paperback but the thicker, water-resistant paper makes the cover more durable than most paperbacks.

Buy it first!

Awesome lens with lots of information! I had a pet rat, Tessy, in high school. She was a wonderful companion and so cute!

We all left the apartment yesterday for the entire afternoon. So sweet to see our little guy waiting by the cage door, swaying and bright eyed, I swear he was happy to hear us come home, just like a cat or a dog would be. He's a solo rattie, so his peeps are important to him. He makes wonderful company; we love him very much.

Ooo, I can't wait to read some of these lenses! You have quite a talent for crafting an interesting lensography. Enjoy some Angel dust for your efforts.

Have you put your rats in competition, like at a state fair? This is a wonderful niche. It is going into the "coolest niches" lensography.

We loved the fancy rats we had. A gray and a black and white, so I don't know if they were really fancy. I would have a rat pet again, if I did not have a Jack Russell.

I had rats growing up and LOVED having them around! Unfortunately they have a bad rap, but they were great pets for me!
