One thing to keep in mind about raising healthy pets is their mental well being. They need to feel safe and loved. They need to know they will be greeted in a friendly manner when family members approach.
If animals are frightened and chased (other than in a playful manner) they become nervous, agitated, and sometimes aggressive. Some animals, not all. I do not mean to overgeneralize.
But they need to know that they are wanted. Playing with them, exercising them, talking to them all are ways to let them know they are wanted.
They need to know that they can depend on you to feed them and to help them stay healthy by seeing their immunizations are kept up to date.
Training them to follow your expected behaviors should be accomplished in a nonthreatening manner.
Taking time to show you care lets your animals know they are wanted and important. These factors will help to insure that you are raising a healthy animal.

Since our pets are our "children", we take care of them and look after their welfare like we would a child. They look up to us to love and care for them. If we can't make that promise to them, we shouldn't have pets. It's very important to look after their health.
I love my cats and the best thing I ever did for my cats was keeping them together.
In the last year I had to make some personal sacrifices to keep them all together, but I could not imagine what it would have been like for them had I split them up after they had been together their whole lives.
Some days the food, groomer, and vet bills stress me out, but in the end I know that I did the right thing by them and they give me love back in spades.
