What is your favorite Dog Food Brand?
Do you have a dog food brand that you think is the best and why is the brand your favorite.
We have done research and by watching our dogs over the years. They thrive on Purina ProPlan Lamb and Rice. They love it and they are all healthy and their coats shine.
Raw. It is a special kind of food that can be bought at the butcher´s. Feeding it will tend to make dogs turn up their noses at regular kibble, however. Wonder why?
I think many different brands of food can work for different dogs, different families, different budgets, etc. I use Blue Buffalo as a base and like to mix in Orijen, Wellness, Evo, By Nature, or another above-average kibble. Switching up his kibble is important to me, I don't want him to be dependent on one food, and the change of protein ingredients (duck, venison, lamb, chicken, salmon, etc) can only be beneficial. On top of that I like to incorporate a lot of whole foods into the kibble base, such as eggs, fruits, veggies, and pieces of chicken or beef.
To make things easy, I usually just tell people I feed my dog Blue Buffalo.
I am a Vet Tech and have sat through all of the different brands trying to get us to carry their product in the clinic. To be honest my very favorite brand and the one I feed to both of my dogs and cat is Royal Canin. It is however very expensive and if I didn't have an employee discount I wouldn't be able to afford it.
If I go away from Royal Canin it will be to Science Diet - which is a high quality food that goes through a tough quality control process. It however does not contain the probiotics that Royal Canin does so I will expect slightly gassier puppies
I also agree that different dogs need different diets. Some dogs will do great on a premium kibble that will not do well at all for another dog who does best on a raw diet. I believe it is up to each owner to research food and then see what works best for their individual dogs.
I feed Blue Buffalo as well to my adult dogs. However, I have one dog with cholesterol pits on his corneas caused by fat in the diet. I have to keep him on low fat kibble, and Bil Jac senior has worked best for him. It does cause his coat to be excessively dry, but the extra oils in food to make his coat shine will also cause his cholesterol to increase and the sight ending pits to return.
I had another dog who had terrible allergic reactions to common proteins such as beef, chicken, lamb, etc. Every few years, I had to switch her food to another "novel" protein as she became allergic to the protein she had been eating. After going through chicken, beef, lamb, turkey and venison, I switched to Pro Plan's sensitive stomach recipe with salmon. I am NOT a fan of Purina products or Pro Plan and cringed when I did it. But it turned out to be the only food she tolerated for more than two years. She was on it for the last five years of her life and passed away from old age a year ago.
Different dogs need different diets to meet their individual nutrition needs. And, yes, the people have to be taken into account as well. A raw diet just isn't feasible for some people who travel extensively with their dogs. Also some people have very limited incomes and must find an inexpensive kibble or raw diet that will work for their dogs.
An "one size fits all" answer doesn't work when it comes to canine nutrition.

What do you feed your dog?The healthiest choice for pets is a diet of real food. Despite that, most people continue to buy dry food with few vitamins but lots of dyes and preservatives. What do you think the best thing for your dog is, or do you just buy whatever is convenient?

Isn't it healthier for dogs to eat raw meat than commercially prepared dog food?I am considering changing my dog's diet. Currently they get a mixture of commercial dog food, rice, raw chicken, raw beef heart, carrots, eggs and left-overs. My friend gives her dogs only raw meat, fruit, leaves,...
