Why Their First Horse Grooming Kit Is More Than Just a Gift

Updated on December 04, 2013

With Christmas just around the corner I was beginning to wonder what on Earth could I get for my daughter. I wanted something a little bit special to go along side the usual gifts and trinkets you buy at this time of year, as she is growing up so fast. You always want to give them something that means more and bears a special message. SO recently when she got a little job helping with some of our neighbours horses, I remembered a gift I received nearly 30 years ago and still have to this day...

From a very small age I loved horses, I loved the smell of them and being around them. 30 Years ago I was given my very first horse grooming kit.

It consisted of a small lunch box sized container, 2 brushes a hoof pick, mane comb, and a cute little bar of saddle soap.

To this day I honestly have never used it. It has stayed with me throughout all these years as a reminder of my dreams and hopes and I suppose a part of my child hood that was sacred to me.

I used to hide in my room and I would open it to peek inside and smell the newness of the brushes and dream one day I would have my very own horse. I would run my hands over the brushes imagining how shiny I could get the horses coat making it shine like the sun.

I would place carefully all its contents back in and close it over tightly, it was so precious to me (Remember I was only 10)

I was lucky growing up, I lived in the country and at the weekends my dad took me to help with the Charity Riding for the Disabled UK.

Here I got to handle the horses, taking part in their day to day care of them without actually owning, and during the holidays I was allowed to be fully responsible for one of the horses.

So It really was like owning your own. As my dad said 'just not with the Expense that goes with owning a Pony'.

Everything I needed to care for the horses was supplied. So I never took my little grooming kit out with me, as I was keeping it for the day I got my very own horse.

Well 30 years later. I still do not have my own horse. But the dreams that little box holds inside I am fortunate enough to share now with my own daughter. She also does not have her own horse but wants one and has volunteered at a local estate, to look after their very rare but gorgeous Skyrian Ponies.

These ponies are endangered and are part of an international breeding programme. And we have fallen head over heels in love with them.

The first thing I did was rush to find my little grooming box, and dusted it off to give to my daughter to take with her, when we went to see to the ponies. As we cycled along the road to the Estate I told her about my little grooming box and what I used to do. And how much my little red box meant to me.

My daughter turned to me and said...

'Thank you mum, but this is yours for when you have your own pony... we will still keep it as you just never know' who knew a little gift like this could have so much meaning.

SO I have hunted online to find the perfect grooming box for my daughter.

My daughter is growing up fast, and as the digital age takes over, sometimes I find her sitting in her room more interested in what her friends are doing or saying online. For her to have an keen interest and its an outdoor interest is just awesome.

I love our Mother & Daughter days to our little band of horses. Where just now we are helping to 'break in' the newly arrived little foals. And she loves seeing how training these little guys is so rewarding.

My daughter is learning a huge life skill and teaching her its okay to dream. We talk about when she is older and she has her own stables and I can have my own horse too. I am still young enough to still have my dreams too

I hope she likes her own little Grooming box and i am overjoyed that she does not just see the box and brushes but can see hopes, dreams and possibilities for her future

Giving gifts that can give your children dreams and hopes is in My Opinion what Gifts are all about.

This is beautiful and very touching Lisa. I love this story! I adore horses too so I know what you mean about having an outdoor interest and skill for your daughter. I hope she does continue to dream and fulfil her dreams and I am sure the gift you are going to give her will mean so much to her.

I know a horse-mad little girl who will be getting her own grooming kit for Christmas - she's only 4 but already she has been helping to groom the horses at her riding lessons!

Awesome review, very inspiring! I had a ballerina outfit when I was a kid, and though by now I have outgrown that particular dream I know what it meant to be to have it at that age! I wore it everywhere and danced around the house and dreamed of being a princess fairy ballerina! (When I dreamt, I dreamt BIG! And not necessarily realistically!)

It's wonderful that you still have your original kit. I think your daughter is blessed to have such a loving mom that gives from the heart. Beautiful photos as well. Congratulations on your winnings also. Isn't it funny its about a horse :)

That is a beautiful story, you had a special father, and your daughter has a special mother. I did have a horse and could not keep it where I lived, so it could only be visited when I could...so as your father said...you had all the fun of a horse without the expense.

Wonderful story! Horses are in my past, but I don't know if they will be in my future. I've loved being around them so much. I hope you and your daughter are able to continue being with them for as long as you want to be.

Oh, I loved this personal story. We share the dream. How I would have loved receiving a grooming kit as a young girl for whom horses were the center of the Universe. Loved the photos. Keep the dream alive!

As a girl who grew up adoring horses, I really appreciate this. I did have my own horse from the age 11 to 23, but I can still remember the time before that, when I was volunteering at the stable. I would have given my right arm for a grooming kit like this!

What touched me the most about your story is your daughter telling you to keep your old grooming kit, since it was yours. She really understood how much it meant to you, and will definitely appreciate the kit you have found for her. I loved reading this!
