Appearance

Head: The head, and entire body, of the Golden Retriever is completely balanced and well chiseled.

Coat: The Golden Retriever's top coat is somewhat wavy and waterproof. Their dense undercoat keeps them cool in the summer and warm in the winter, but is soft. Coats vary in different shades of gold, from light golden to some richer darker golden. As puppies, their coats are much lighter and darken with age. The top coat sheds slightly all year round, while the undercoat sheds with season changes (spring and fall).

Tail: The tail of the Golden Retriever is well set and carried level with the back. Their tails are usually fairly feathery, with longer hair being here than on their main bodies.

Behavior and Intelligence

Golden retrievers are most noted for their loyalty, friendliness and intelligence. They rank fourth in the most intelligent dogs, behind the Border Collie, Poodle and German Shepherd. Not being a "one man" dog, and loving anyone who treats them nicely, they are an absolutely wonderful family pet. They are trusting, gentle and loving. They are noted for their patience with children and they have a major eager to please. They have been one of the most popular choices of family dogs for quite some time, and for good reason. Their unrelenting faithfulness and calmness makes them a really great choice for families with children of all ages. They're also fairly active and can keep up with adventurous people who love being outdoors and hiking.

Health and Lifespan

Unfortunately Golden Retrievers only have a typical lifespan of 11 years. They commonly have genetic disorders and diseases. Hip dysplasia and obesity (because they love to eat!) are common for this breed. Adult Golden Retrievers should be on a somewhat strict diet of 3-5 cups of food a day. Another great calorie cutter for breeds prone to obesity is feeding them veggies in place of some of their regular dry food. Wet food shouldn't even be considered for dogs who have a passion for eating. Carrots, green beans, and rice are great substitutes that will keep your dog healthy and trim.
