Have You Seen This Awesome Wild Mustang Movie?

Updated on June 18, 2014

"Wild Horse Wild Ride"

If you love horses, especially North America's Wild Mustangs, you should see "Wild Horse Wild Ride". The management of the wild mustang populations, and the land they live on, has been a controversial topic for quite some time now. This is an amazing documentary of one way to manage the herd and to raise money and awareness. "Wild Horse Wild Ride" gives us a peek into the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge: the horses, the people, and the event.

I dream of adopting a wild horse. A person who has experience with horses instinctively knows that it takes a lot to safely own a wild mustang. This documentary shows exactly how difficult that transition can be, for both the horse and the human.

You've got to see this multiple award-winning movie if you haven't already. If you have seen it, it's probably time to see it again.

The Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge

If not, it is an event I desperately want to attend. It is definitely a 'bucket list' kind of thing. The Extreme Mustang Makeover, paraphrased, is a National event in which 100 horses from Mustang holding facilities are "given" to 100 trainers for training. The 100 trainers probably participate in this for 100 different reasons. The culmination is the auction at the end of the event, which is the time the horses go to their new homes.

The Mustang Heritage Foundation, in cooperation with the BLM, created and hosts the Extreme Mustang Makeover. The event is held to help show the versatility and trainability of our country's four-legged national treasures. It is notable that in 2013, two events were cancelled due to the country's budget and sequestration issues. Please visit the official Extreme Mustang Makeover webpage for current information.

There has been controversy about wild mustangs for decades; what to do with them and how to appropriately manage them. I believe that the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge is one way to help the public remember our wild horses of the west and to help some of the horses find forever homes.

The Movie: Wild Horse Wild Ride.

I watched this video for the first time with the never-heard-of-it-but-it-looks-okay attitude. I was renting it. So, what's a couple of dollars if it turns out to be a stinker? It was not a stinker. I've purchased a copy and I've watched it over and over since.

The movie follows several trainers and horses through pickup of the horses, getting acquainted period, training (of horse and trainer at times), and then the event. I'm thankful that the directors, Alex Dawson and Greg Gricus, gave me this chance to experience the do's and don'ts, the ups and downs, and the amazing bond that occurs between man and animal. Even though I've seen the movie several times, I still laugh, hold my breath, and cry through different scenes.

Having grown up on a working horse ranch, I can appreciate where you are coming from. One either loves horses or they don't. As a youngster, some of my earliest memories were of sitting in the saddle in front of my Grand Father as my Father and Uncles and Cousins chased wild horses into a box canyon. Then Grand Father and I would ride down there and he would sort the horses, keeping about a dozen that were in good health which we then took back to the ranch to break and sell. Wild Mustangs make excellent working horses and are extremely smart. Since the Government has taken over the management of Wild Horses, one can no longer round them up. The Government does and many are destroyed each year. I hope more people read your lens and get involved in this project you outlined, as THAT is the only real hope for these beautiful animals. Thanks for an excellent lens. Cheers.

Nice article and a great motivation to watch this movie. To be honest, I`m a little bit afraid of horses because of the accident I had in childhood but I love all animals and I try to give my best when I`m around them.

I enjoyed this movie as well as the other one listed here ("Buck"). Also read the book you feature (Falling for Eli). Woke up yesterday to some of the free ranging horses of this mountain valley in my yard. Horses touch my spirit in all the right ways.
