Hippo in the House - For Real !!!

Having a Hippopotamus figurine in the home is one thing - but what would you do with a REAL Hippo roaming the house?

Hippopotamus

Hippo's tend to live in fresh water that is slow moving and close to fields of grass on which they can graze. In water they appear amazingly graceful and in fact they spend most of the day there. They are vegetarians and do not eat any form of meat. The name Hippopotamus translates as "River Horse"

Hippo's can often be seen yawning - but don't mistake this for the animal feeling tired - it is actually a threat or warning.

Social Hippo's?

Hippo's that huddle together are referred to as a "pod". But the reality is that we don't really understand why they do this. At face value they may seem to like each others company, often gathering in groups of up to 100 or so animals. But they do not seem to be very sociable in each others company, they males tend to group together and the females tend to stick together. They will leave the water to graze as individuals.

Hippos are fascinating creatures. I heard they are more dangerous to people than all wild cats of Africa, including the lions. But they can be really cute in their special way - from safe distance of course...
