Horses are one of the most majestic creatures to ever run on this planet. If you have ever been up close to one, you would know just what I’m talking about. If you’ve ever ridden on a horse, then you know all about the amazing bond that can exist between human and equine.

It’s almost as if they can understand you, and you can understand them once you get to know a new horse. There is this communication that cannot be heard, rather understood.

While you’re brushing their mane and feeding them their favorite treats, talking into their ear as they snort back at you out of acknowledgement and pure pleasure; there’s just nothing like it!

Buying a Horse

Before buying a horse, there is a lot that needs to be considered. It’s not like buying a hamster where you go to a pet store, pick a cute hamster, buy the cage, bedding and food, give it a name, and live with it for a couple of years. You need to think about:

  • Veterinary bills

  • Ferrier

  • Cost of feed

  • Size of property

  • Stable or barn for shelter

  • Long-term commitment of up to 30 years

  • The possibility of needing additional horses as companions

It really is something that should be thought about in great depth, as it is so inhumane to the horse to build a bond with it, and then deciding that you can’t afford it, and needing to rehome it. So many horses end up at rescues and shelters due to things that could have been avoided had the owners thoroughly thought about their decisions.

Speaking of rescues, they are a great place to start your search for a horse. There is so many horses at rescues that are hoping to find a nice, loving family to bond with. Search online for rescues near you, or call local animal shelters and see if they can give you some pointers.

Finding the Perfect Horse

When it comes to finding the perfect horse for your family, it’s more than a matter of looking at pictures of horses online that are up for adoption and making a decision from a description.

You have to actually meet the horse, asses it’s personality, let it assess your personality and see if there is a connection. Sometimes it takes a little while to build a bond, and if you are really looking for a horse you’ll have to work with, that’s up to you.

But there is such a thing as “love at first sight” when it comes to horses and people, and if this is what you are looking for, don’t stop until you find it.

Once you have found that perfect horse, it will be needing a name. If you are adopting an older horse, chances are, it already has a name that it is used to, so changing the name will be up to you. Whatever the case, it needs to be addressed by a name.

Choosing the Right Name

Horses all have very different personalities, so when you take a deep look into those sweet, pretty eyes, what do you see?

Using their personalities can really help when trying to think of perfect horse names. Really pay close attention to their behavior and mannerisms, the noises they make, how they respond to you, and so on.

If you need some inspiration for horse names and you have already established a riding bond with the horse, saddle up and giddy up!

Free your mind on a horse ride, let the breeze flow through your hair, cuddle that sweet horse closely while the mane brushes your cheek; the name will come to you.

Fun Facts
