How To Make Easy Homemade Cat Toys For Cats And Kittens

Updated on October 6, 2014

Homemade Cat Toys

There are many easy homemade cat toys you can make with simple items lying around the house. People enjoy making their own for a variety of reasons. In some cases, it's because someone brings home a cat or kitten unexpectedly and wants to provide toys immediately.

In other cases, it's because they want to help the environment, as toys can be made from recycled goods. In still other cases, people can't or don't want to spend money on toys. For whatever the reason, here are some simple ones you can make at home.

How To Make Cat Toys

Kitten and Egg

Before I get started, let me explain how I came up with these. My kids recently found a couple of kittens in our garage. We had seen a couple of feral, (wild,) cats in the area, but had no idea that one of them had kittens. They caught them and brought them in the house.

Being our family has worked with ferals in the past, we knew what needed to be done in order to tame them and get them ready to be adopted into their forever homes.

One of the things was to play with them. Although they would play with each other, it was important for them to learn how to interact with humans. Once they began to get more comfortable with us, we introduced toys.

One of the first things we tried when got more comfortable around us was an empty toilet paper roll. I rolled it back and forth on the floor and within a couple of minutes, one started chasing it and swatting it around. Then she picked it up and started rolling around with it. Success!

If you do this, just be sure that any leftover toilet paper is removed before you use the roll.

A simple crumpled up piece of paper can make for feline amusement. I recommend white printer paper so you avoid them getting any kind of ink into their mouths.

Cats are naturally curious. After all, most likely you've heard the term, "Curiosity killed the cat." Many cats can't resist looking inside bags. Place a paper bag on the floor and let the exploring begin.

Got a plastic bottle cap? That can be quite entertaining. Being I have kids, I happened to have some leftover plastic Easter eggs and those have been a form of entertainment.

A cardboard box can be a playland for kittens. They can play inside and peak out when curious to see what else is going on. In addition, it also makes a nice hiding place.

Many kittens like to have a special place where they can retreat.More and more pet owners are using laser pointers to play with their pets. That's great if you have one of them at home. However, if you don't, a simple flashlight will do the trick.

Just flash the light around and let your feline chase the light. I have an older cat who goes crazy when I do this. It's so hilarious to watch. He'll even try to climb the wall if I put the light on it.

Now, I know it's a little hard to see, but while taking pictures, this kitten found my daughters comb on the floor and it became an instant toy!

If you would like to do something a bit more complicated, this shows you how to make three different toys. One is a mousy toy, the second a feather toy and lastly a cork toy. All are pretty simple to do.

Dangerous to Cats

As I mentioned earlier, cats love bags and I suggested a paper bag. Be sure you actually use paper and not plastic. A cat or kitten could end up being suffocated if they play with a plastic bag.

You've probably seen kittens playing with yarn and thought how cute this looked. I used to use yarn as well until I found out it's not safe. Some felines like to put the yarn in their mouths and if they do this, this can accidentally ingest some of the yard.

The same holds true for old socks. Some of the threading can come loose and accidentally be swallowed.

How to Make a Mouse Toy

One of the favorite toys in this house has been mouse toys. My own cats love to swat at them and chase them. Now, I have never personally made one, but I found a site that step-by-step instructions along with a free template.

When you go to the site, look under the section that says: What You'll Need and you'll see where it says PDF of the mouse template. Click on PDF and you'll be taken to the free template so you can print it out.

Mouse Toys for Cats

As much as you might like to make your own cat toys, you may prefer to just buy your own mouse toys. Here are some available from Amazon.

And a cat must be entertained. Dogs get along with sleeping a lot, but cats are quite different.

This is a great lens and as I have many kittens from time to time I am an old hand at making little toys for them. By the way are you in Australia as you have an ad for RSPCA animal insurance? I am in the ACT.

My cat loved monkey nuts - not to eat, of course, but to play with. They make the ideal cat toy as they rattle, they can be flicked across the floor at a rate of knots, and the outer husk is soft enough for the cat's claws to dig into. Just rattling one would have Charlie (RIP) crouched and ready to pounce.

Its interesting how it doesn't matter what you classify as a cat toy, they tend to play with what ever they want to.

This is freaking adorable. Thanks for the info. I have a cat named Lily who really likes the water and I was thinking about building her a boat. Would that be too traumatizing?

Due to allergies, we have been a dog family, but I do love cats too. It's so fun to watch them play with pretty much anything! Enjoyed reading this!
