Tips On Keeping Geese

Updated on May 20, 2013

Are You Keen On Keeping Geese?

Keeping geese is different from raising them, the main difference is that you only maintain the number of geese that you originally got if you intend to keep them, while raising geese actually involves breeding and hatching geese to expand their numbers. Since it is generally easier to keep geese rather than raise them, lots of people choose this option when it comes to taking care of this type of poultry. But even though keeping geese is easier, there are still a couple of things that you need to take into consideration if you want your flock to stay happy and healthy.

Keeping Geese - 3 Important Things You Need to Consider

1. Shelter

Geese are fairly low maintenance, and rarely do they need any shelter. But there are times when it is important for them to have a roof over their heads, like when they lay their eggs or when the weather takes a turn for the worst. Though geese farming generally means that you do not have to worry about them breeding, they will still breed and multiply on their own, so you should at least place a wooden shed right in the area where you are keeping them. This makes sure that they have a safe place to lay their eggs and hatch them.

2. Food and Water

Though geese can live on grass alone, it is still better to give them the recommended poultry feed on a daily basis. Poultry feed provides a lot more nutrients than just grass, this will enable your birds to fatten up nicely and become more hardy to diseases. And, another thing, goslings, or young geese cannot survive on just grass, so you need to give them poultry feed that is high in nutrients until they are strong enough to fend for themselves.

Geese are waterfowl, so it is recommended that they are kept near a body of fresh water. If you unfortunately do not have a creek or small pond in your property, then you should at least put in a large through of water so that your geese have a place to wade in and a source of water they can drink from.

3. Amount of land

If you are only interested in about keeping geese, then you do not have to worry too much about the amount of land you need to allocate for them. For instance, if you are only planning on keeping around twenty geese, then they would be alright with just one acre of land. If your geese start multiplying, then you either allocate more land for keeping them, or you should find a way to get rid of the excess numbers.

These are just some of the important things that you need to remember about raising geese. Always keep in mind that you need to feed them properly and give them plenty of water, and you should also give them plenty of room to walk around and graze on fresh grass. You will surely have a happy and healthy flock of geese in your hands if you follow these simple tips on rearing geese.
