Must Love Cats - the story of my adoptions
& Dogs & other animals! While I love all animals (err well most.. I HATE snakes and the 'hairless' cats creep me out) as long as it has fur, more likely I like it.
For as far as I remember I've always had a cat. My parents had one named mittens when I was too young to remember. I only 'remember' this cat from mom & dad telling how the cat used to chase me up the wall, and I have this literal image in my head of this as if watching a Tom & Jerry Cartoon.
That brings me to the first cat I had. I named him Tom Jerry because that was my favorite Cartoon (still is but not that garbage new stuff). When they say You don't choose your cat they choose you, Tom made that absolutely true! We got him from my Grandfather's (aka Pop-Pop) and he had two siblings as well. Tom would follow me all over the yard and one day he stood in front of my Dad's tire like Take me home or run me over!
So mom & dad said we could keep him and took him home, sadly though we didn't take his siblings and the next time we went to Pop-pop's they were not there. (they think a hawk got them) Tom and I had up until spring/summer 1990 when mom had him put down because he was sick and we didn't want him to suffer.
Our vet said they had a cat that could use a home and mom went to check her out but we were about to go on vacation so we didn't want to take her home yet as that wouldn't be fair to her. So when we came home we got Tiffany (why I named her that I have no idea) That same year probably the end of November my mom was Trying to catch this black & White stray cat that was across the street for our landlord who worked with Just Strays. We took him to foster for a bit, but he stayed in the hall as we didn't know if he had anything before. But we watched after him,and I was sick and so would go in the hall to play with him. Well mom told the landlord to let them know not to let anyone take him and December 5th We got an Early Holiday gift. Jonathan (another Black and white cat) who came in as if he already knew the place. He used to 'help' dad when he'd fix something and was a clepto(maniac) and would steal the cat upstairs toys if the doors would be open.
Sadly Jonathan had a heart attack but he got to be happy at the end as his daddy was home on vacation and got his favorite treat (some chicken) not long before he had it. Then Tiffany (not sure how long later a yer or so maybe) Got sick she kept getting water on her lungs and was suffering, not eating etc. July 2002 on the 4th of July (while we were having a party in the back yard) had to ruin my day and decided the next day we would have to put Tiffany to sleep so she won't suffer anymore. Well I tried to spend time with her that day so I really didn't enjoy myself for the celebration I'd go in and out. She had a nice last day it was a beautiful day and we let her on the deck to get some air and smell the flowers in the planters as she liked to do.Well after that I moped around, this is the only time I remember being without a cat, and I was absolutely pathetic.
August 2nd 2002 We went during my Lunch break to Just Strays to pick out a kitten. When I first walked in there was a cage with a black kitten and a white one both you could fit in the palm of your hands! They were running around and so cute, but they were still being bottle fed :-( So we didn't get them. I sat in the middle of the room waiting for a cat to come to me, at first none really did then this one black cat (which is what I was looking for) was cleaning itself or something and forgot to put its tongue back in its mouth. So That's the one we adopted and I (as always was the one to name it) Sully, after my favorite band's lead singer.
In 2003 or 2004 I think it was the Thursday before Memorial day weekend where I was working they found a little black kitten with a little patch of white on her chest and belly in their tree near the store (on my day off, I always missed the good stuff) They kept her and my boss named her Pepper. (thank goodness it wasn't those cheesy cliched ones I hate like blackie or shadow). She took right to me! She really didn't care much for many people and was somewhat temperamental (or just Mental at times altogether!) You could be petting her then all of a sudden you'd get swatted. Most of the time she was cool with me but she could be a nasty cat as well. Pepper doesn't take any crap, case in point one day some dog that was golden brown & have no idea what kind other than having a mane (I kid you not I thought a lion was walking down the street!) Walks up to the store in which shes sitting on the stoop and starts getting her hackles up and hissing at this dog that's at least 5x her size! (this was when she was still pretty young) The dog just looked dumbfounded and we were all cracking up as she just stood her ground! She may be a female cat but she's got more Ping Pong balls than male cats! Every year around the time she arrived at my old job at a lumberyard, she'd disappear for months, then come back around fall. We have no idea where she'd go but she always came back. one year I think she was gone for if not the whole year most of it 7 months at least. Finally one day one of the girls and I went outside and took a walk around the yard. At one point we start to call her, and we were down near where the auto shop next door had a few scrap cars on racks. She was sleeping on the seat of one looked up and meowed at us then started to get down & took off to the fence in the front happy to see us! Well during the time she was missing, one of the guys got a cat from one of the deliveries he went on and my Boss named him Andy. He's a cute little guy but likes to bully Pepper. He's a total mouser.
I occasionally go back to visit every so often to say hi to my former co-employees as well as Pepper & Andy as they would come keep me company in my guard shed when I used to work outside.
Update...a few years ago I found out Andy passed on in not a good way. And Pepper had to get a new home, one of my old jobs customers took her as the new owner was allergic to cats. (I hope she doesn't feel like I abandoned her. I never got to wish her good-bye.)
(note: I am currently looking for a pic of Jonathan to scan and include here.)

PAL= Pets Attention & Love
Pets need love and attention, & is one reason why we seek their companionship as well.
Unlike some people I know, if You have a dog; Don't just put them in a pen in the yard to get air.
They need to run around the yard, play with their toys and frankly talk to them they will love you more for it.
As for cats they usually find their own entertainment (sometimes being yours!) you've heard of PTA's this is
