Making Dog Clothes

Making Dog Clothes

How I got my start making dog clothing. Where I am at today.

I adopted a small breed dog a few years ago. It was a bumpy start for the little guy, but now he is healthy and happy. He came into my life with so much need for attention and love, it actually helped me to live again as well.

I was homebound and this little dog has not only brought love into my life but he's taught me to love him as well. I started making dog clothes which has given me something to do while being stuck at home.

I see bumper stickers on cars that say "who rescued who?" ... Well, this is a perfect statement for my situation because the little dog saved my life, just as I saved his.

Whirly, My Dog. The Beginning.

How it all came together

Several years ago I became disabled and had to stay at home most of the time. Watching daytime TV and sitting around my home became almost unbearable. Then about two and a half years ago, my partner adopted a little Maltese dog from the Oregon Humane Society. His name is Whirly.

Whirly was a breeder dog, used only for making puppies in a puppy mill. When the Humane Society got him, at the age of 9 years old, he was malnourished, had multiple infections, and was in need of a lot of care. After they got his health stabilized they adopted him out to a family who had him only 3 months and brought him back to the animal shelter because they couldn't care for him. His health had become worse. When I got him he had to take antibiotics for several months and needed to be visiting the vet several times for care. Today he is healthy and happy!

A Little Dog Inspires Me - How the love of a dog can help

Whirly inspired me. I immediately fell in love with him and it grows daily. I have Crohn's and Colitis, so being stuck at home was very upsetting after living a life of being very active and doing things in the outdoors. Now I have a little life to care for, love, play with, and share my life with.

I found out right away that the breed of dog can get cold easily in the winter and sunburned in the summer, because they don't have an undercoat and their fur is very fine. Furthermore, when I first got him he wasn't in very good health so I wanted to put dog clothes on him to keep him warm, comfortable, and secure.

I went to all the major pet stores and started buying dog clothes, but everything was either too big or two small ... nothing fit right. The other thing I noticed was how cheaply pet apparel is made. I then decided to start making dog clothing. The clothes I was making was noticed by everyone and they loved them. Now I have started my own company, Whirly Dog Supplies - , selling the dog clothes I make.

@SusanDeppner: Thank you so much Susan... really, I am the lucky one. Everyday he brings so much love and joy to my life. I have never had or even really liked small breed dogs until I got him, but now I couldn't imagine not having the little guy in my life. :)
