Memorial for my Beloved Pet

Updated on June 2, 2014

A lifetime of love and happiness

This is my favorite photo of Rock. It shows how beautiful and dignified he was in life. The Rock I will always cherish and remember.

Unfortunately we have forever lost him. (July 5, 2012) This was/IS so very hard for us all even still. ( As I revisit this lens to this day,it will be one year on July the 5th, coming in just days :( which I almost dread, I find it so hard to believe still)

Please visit my lens to see the story of our friend Rock and how wonderfully a pet can enrich a family's life. The memories come flooding back one by one.

The photos are all my own, please do not duplicate thank you

And On We Go. . . .

Before we brought this special guy into our home, we had another great dog (purebred Shepherd), and when we lost him, I was very adamant about taking on another. I didn't want to get attached and feel the loss again.

Nevertheless, after about three months, Ii felt like our house was so incomplete without having a dog. We seemed to always have a dog in the home. The kids were used to it. And then again, so was I.

So, we started out during the winter school break and went to the local pound. There were no real attractions at that point, so on we went. Next we traveled a ways to http://www.animalleague.org/ to the World's Largest No-Kill Animal Rescue and Adoption Organization.

There he was. He was the most adorable little guy in the cage. My boys just went for him. There was no comparison to any other pets at the time, they were just driven to him. He was brought into a special room where we all got to know him and play with him for awhile before we made the final decision and before we knew it he was ours!

My middle son was so cute, he even offered up half of the adoption fee to us :) We were on our way home with our new puppy with the boys taking turns with the puppy on their laps. They were starting to name him on the trek home. They had different opinions at the time. The name that finally stuck was Rock, after the wrestler, Dwayne, the Rock Johnson, lol This was the year 1999.

I have documented in photos many parts of Rocks life with us. I will post some, but could never post them all!! Wish I could.

Homecoming - What an adorable baby he was :)

So, we bring Rock home. Everyone was so excited. He acclimates very well to the surroundings, look how comfortable he is, and he gets along well with the kids and us. He plays just like any other puppy.

We decide to crate him to train him, and he cries at night for a bit. I can't contain myself, the Mommy in me prevents me from leaving him alone in our den and I continue to stay with him for a few nights. He does well after a week or so. I also did a fine job of housebreaking him rather quickly.

He is such a great dog. The only problem we ran into was the first week, he would not eat. The animal league gave us food to feed him and we purchased the same food thinking he would eat the same type. It was canned food, and he would not eat it at all. It was days and days and I got so worried.

The vet checked him out and gave him his vaccinations, and said he was fine, and just keep trying. Funny thing was, I went and bought some dry puppy food and that did the trick! I was thinking he would have trouble eating it since they were feeding him the soft canned food for so long, until his eight weeks that we picked him up! All went well after that.

Not Going Anywhere ;)

Rock is amazing. He is so good. He does not leave our property line at all. I have taught him this by walking him back and forth, up and down the lines and treating him with bologna. He does so well. The neighbors are overwhelmed by the way he just sits on the lawn and watches people walk and drive by. He is adorable.

As time goes on, Rock goes everywhere with us that he possibly can. He is great in the car. He goes from neighborhood walks to camping trips, to 5 hour rides to Upstate camping. He is a wonderful dog and so well behaved. He is welcomed in hotels that are pet friendly without a hitch.

At home he gets plenty of attention. Even when the kids are in school, I am at home, due to the fact that I work at home. I telecommute. Until all of a sudden, my company wants me to go out on the road =/ I feel like Rock will feel alone all day without me home all day. Someone offers me a black lab female that is five months old one day. It happens at just the right time. So we take her. Her name is Sammy.

The first week, we think we are going to have to send her back to the former owners, because Rock is not welcoming her at all. He has started immediately drooling and foaming at his mouth as he sniffs at her. He follows her around continuously and does this. He is not mean or vicious at all, but he definitely is not liking her being here.

Togetherness

So, now I will post some pictures of how the two doggies got to be friends. After that terrible first week, apparently Sammy got on the best side of Rock, and after that, they could not be closer. The love affair went on. This was in 2002.

Friends forever and ever

My son was so close to Rock, he is the baby of the family. This means that he had Rock almost all of his lifetime. It was sad for him to watch Rock when he was ill and going downhill as he was starting to leave us. It was even sadder for me to watch both of them together. The first thing my son did when he arrived home from school or work as he grew older, was look for Rock. He proceeded to get right down on the floor with him, hugging and laying with him. They were dear, dear friends. As he was the final child left at home, Rock had become like a sibling to him!

What a good sport :) Rock let us do whatever we wanted lol

I'm so sorry for your loss. Our dog Rocky passed away two years ago. Sometimes I think I still feel him sleeping under the bed or see him in the backyard. He was a part of the family and we miss him very much.

What a wonderful companion and family member. I, too, recently lost a furbaby. They are part of our families and our hearts, aren't they. Lovely photos too.

Nice story! Pets bring so much joy but they leave such an emptiness when they are gone. Don't think I could ever be without one though.

So sorry you lost your sweet Rock. I've been through it and I know how difficult it is. I have a 17 year old dog who is fading fast right now so your story touched a vulnerable spot in my heart. Angel blessing for the loving tribute.

Thanks for this beautiful tribute to Rock. I'm a foster caregiver for shelter kitties, and it's always so wonderful when a pet finds its forever home. Saying goodbye is hard when we love them so much.

I have lived through several animals who gave love and fun like there was no tomorrow. There always is a tomorrow, of course, and that's part of the deal. That these creatures would not live as long as we do is one of the saddest realities of life. Rock did his job and was good. There is no better thing a dog can do.

Thanks for sharing your story. Animals bring so much to our lives - it is so difficult when we loose them - I wish they had longer lives - I have lost a few and thought about not doing it again, but like you I felt an emptiness without a dog - Blessed by a Squid Angel.

I totally understand pet love. I am a cat person and have had many a sad story over the years. I lost a 4 1/2 year old lilac point Siamese after major surgery as her blood would not clot. It happened back in 1990 and I still miss her, as she was pretty special. I have lost others since then and all though it tugs at your heart-strings, I would never imagine life without Siamese in my life.

I recently had to put my 3 legged dog, Hops, to sleep after he suffered a stroke. He was 15. Contrary to never wanting another dog, the love that I had for Hops needs an outlet - luckily for me, right now at least, I have 5 other dogs ready to soak it up.

What a beautiful story of a loving boy. Losing a pet is a hard thing to do, but somehow, when we open our hearts to a new darling, it all becomes worth it. Thanks for sharing Rock's story.
