Molly the Cats Love Affair with Greenies Dental Treats

Updated on September 14, 2014

Why Molly Loves Her Greenies

Thanks to a 3" scar down the side of my face that I have had since I was a wee babe in arms, I have never really been a cat person, primarily due to the cats claw that inflicted the incision on my infant face as I played in the communal backyard of my parents first Australian residence. Fast forward a quick 48 years (really...where does the time go) and whilst the scar is still there, my attitude to cats has softened, to the point where for the last 5 months I have been cat sitting a chubby tortoise shell called Molly.

Apart from a propensity to eat voraciously and leave me large, stinky deposits in her litter box, Molly has turned out to be quite the enigmatic companion. She yacks at the birds, in what I think is an unsuccessful attempt to convince them to jump into her mouth, she follows me around the house, she hides under my bed when I light the grill and most cute of all, she plays with her stuffed mouse, giving it a good head shake, comparable to a native of India answering a difficult question.

So after a hard morning yacking at birds and spreading the litter box over the laundry floor, what is Molly's favourite snack?

Feline Greenies.

As much as she tries to ignore me and the little purple cloth mouse, instinct means that she eventually caves in to her primal desire and pounces on both of us. The way she destroys them a pack of 20 seems like a great idea!

And a Word From Ted

Molly can be quite picky when it comes to some of her food, as she doesn't like soft food without gravy and she definitely isn't enamoured with human foods such as freshly cooked chicken or fish. It's quite the sight to watch a cat decline a piece of soft white chicken breast meat, yet just shake the pack of Greenies and she comes running. I can even get her out from under my bed with a wry smile and a shake of the pack.

So why does Molly (and I) love Greenies so much? Well since Molly hasn't quite mastered the art of using the keyboard to construct sentences (though she does love to lay across my keyboard when I leave the room and insert random text in my password fields ?#$%^&*())!!!!@@& and other things I write..), I will answer for her.

Molly - Loves them because they are crunchy, contain the combined meat of chicken, lamb, beef, pork and chicken liver, are fortified with the vitamins she needs to keep her healthy, are low is calories and fats and they also contain an added dose of chicken flavour that literally has her purring. Actually as I was writing that sentence I picked up the pack to confirm the ingredients and guess who arose from her deep slumber in front of my heater!

Ted- I love them because they are a snack that not only keeps Molly happy and healthy but they also clean her teeth and freshen her breath. Recently Molly went on a little hunger strike (she just had a few off days where I had to be a little more attentive. You'll be glad to know she is now back to her meowingly, voracious self) and didn't eat any Greenies. I quickly discovered that without the teeth cleaning effect of the snack, she had the most overpowering cat breath when she went to give you one of the many kisses she bestows on a daily basis. I now think of them as a Listerine for cats!

So there you have it straight from the cats mouth, if you want a happy, contented feline with breath so fresh you'll forgive her early morning knocks on your bedroom door and the nose taps when you appear asleep and she wants food or attention, then Greenies are Mollys and my number one choice.

Ps. I'm still a dog person....but don't tell Molly! (Who it should be noted snores to a decibel level similar to a locomotive passing through your bedroom.)

I wonder what they are really thinking when they make that sound. It is neither threatening nor frightening! I have heard ours do it too. Well done on the LOTD!
