Names For A Pet Cat

Updated on September 10, 2014

Are you looking for a name for your pet cat?

Kittens often seem to develop their names through their personality, or appearance, so many times a cat's name will reflect one of these features.

Check out your cat to see if there are any distinguishing physical traits which may be used to name him or her. Otherwise perhaps one of the names in this article will be the perfect name for your cat or kitten.

Photo's are my own or used with permission.

Names for a pet cat or kitten sometimes just develop naturally.

Cats really are very independent yet affectionate pets to own. Instead of you being the master a cat often winds up owning you.

So when you are naming your kitten keep in mind that cats definitely have a distinct and sometimes aloof personality. Cats are different from other pets because they may not come when they are called even if they appear to know their name. Don't worry too much about your cats casual treatment of it's name. Your kitty will eventually respond to the name which you choose for him or her.

Also don't be surprised if your cat's name changes with the passing of time. This is a common occurrence when naming a cat. A cat's personality grows parallel to their physical stature, so as your pet's characteristic attitude emerges, so will the appropriate name for them.

I once named a cat Lady but she eventually morphed into being named Beans. Her character was so beautiful that I would lovingly whisper to her, "You have always been a Lady - haven't you always a lady been."... and Beans she became. Don't be surprised if your cat names his or her self.

More recently, our current cat we adopted from our local animal shelter. His name was Noah which was a nice name but hardly fit his personality. We as a family decided to rename our new pet Sheldon Cooper.

Our cat before our current one was renamed as well. She was given to us by a family friend. The cat was very old and was named Spatz. We named her Gammas because of her age.

If your female cat acts like a Ralph, and responds to this name, then this just may be the perfect name for her. Only you and your cat can decide which is the perfect name to bestow upon your pet.

Don't forget to have your cat spayed or neutered.

Help insure that all pets have the chance to find a good home by having your pet spayed or neutered.

Provide your kitty with plenty of love.

I adore cats (as you can probably see from my name and profile picture lol), I would have a house full of them if I had the space. I have had a few of the names mentioned here for my cats, and I'm sure I'll be back to search for more names the next time we add another member to our family :) Thanks!!

I have always liked the tiger striped British shorthair cats. I generally adopt older cats so i will are already named but have a tendency to change their names once they are living with me. They always seem to appreciate their new name though.

We have had numerous cats in the past - but not for the last few years since we've been travelling a little, and it's not fair to the pets to be shifting so much... Our last cat was "Kitty" - and a few before that were Keone (pronounced Key-Oh-Knee) and he came to us with that name... He meowed all the time, so we though he was lonely.

So, we got HIM a companion from a shelter, and named her "KeyTwo" (since Keone was spelled KeOne, we figured on KeyTwo), and then after that we got "KeyThree" which was shortened to either "K-T" or "Pig Cat" (since she ate everyone's food all the time). We had to put KeyThree through "Fat Kitty Camp" and help her slim down ...

Our cats were all so entertaining and fun, and I miss every one of them! :)

John had also had a cat named "Mandu" (as in Katmandu).

I guess we name our cats for our own entertainment! :) Anyway, fun lens! Love it!

Not now, but I've had many cats over the years. As kids, we chose simplistic names like Boots or Calico. Later I got fancier with Krazy Kat after the cartoon and Silly Kitten after the children's picture books by Austin. My friend named hers Pywacket after a witches cat.

enjoyed the story on how Kricket got her name.. "accompanied by a whole pack of other beasts that she kept hidden throughout the house" That's what my cat sounds like when she runs through the house.. but a bunch of horses! Our old neighbors across the hall had a fish tank & Sully would love to go over & play with their cat gizmo as well as watch the fish in the tank. She never bothered them, however Gizmo.. well ended up in the aquarium & killed one of their oldest fish "oscar' the oscar

@BeyondRoses: My daughter's cat is also a tuxedo cat. When she got her cat it was already named Spatz but being an older cat her name just naturally became Gammas - short for Grandma. It's funny how some cats acquire their names.

My tuxedo cat is named Cloe ... She seems to love her name! I read somewhere once, that cats like the eee sound. Lots of sweet, and cute cat names!
