Names for Pets

Updated on June 9, 2014

Meet Minnie!

Over my lifetime many pets have come and gone. Loved and spoilt they were all members of the family and as their lives are so short compared to humans the names we call them identity periods of our being that would not have been so rich without them.

This picture of Minnie was taken when she was concentrating on things moving around in the front yard. Normally when she looks at me her ears go down as though she is being subservient. When she looks at other things they stand up like tulips in the spring garden.

UPDATE:- Minnie left us on Easter Saturday, April 7th, 2012. She is at peace now after 15 years of a full and lovely life.

But this lens is about names for pets and includes those used by me over the years. If you have suggestions for names or would like to add the name of your pet you can do so at the bottom before the guest book.

Names Should be Short

Animals have smaller brains and some will never learn big words, which is probably why long names tend to get shortened. One day I met a cat whose name was shakespeare. Now I ask you?

I have heard of dogs called such things as William Tell, guess he got Willie for short. My sister had a little pomeranian bought for her as a child which had the name Bamboo Twinkle Toes. It was a pedigree dog and carried the name of one or both of its parents. It was called 'Twinkles' by the family.

My daughter breeds Pomeranians and has some of the most unusual names for them. Geronimo was one, Radar another and Casper another. These are not too bad. Another of her dogs is called Apollo because he howls at the moon.

Cat Names

Cats get better names

It seems like many cats name themselves although some of my kittens have ended up with unusual tags. They are somehow more educated into the way of the world and know what they want. Don't you agree?

Kittens sold recently were called Callie, Jasper, Francine, Oscar (a popular name). Puff, Angus, Whisky and Princess. They were of my two females, Star and Qik. In my early 20's I had a kitten I called Boots, because he used to walk from my feet to my head and back again when I was lying in bed. My sister then had a cat she called Boots who was a monster of an animal but very loving. They used to take him on holidays with them to the coast. Later their daughter had a dalmation dog she called Boot. Now that name has gone around even though I thought I had made it up.

Star's father was called Shiloh because he was very shy. He refused to come anywhere near people and when he was a kitten would not stop shaking if someone looked like buying him. So he stayed and fathered many litters before leaving and not returning when around 12 years of age.

Naming Minnie

It was up to my grandson

Being a mini foxie might have had something to do with it but she was a tiny package when we got her. Asking Robert what he wanted to name her he immediately responded with "Minnie". It suits her down to the ground and she is the love of all my neighbours as well as the family.

Now she is getting old and like humans her hair (um - fur) is turning silver. The number of times she has bent her head like this to me would amount to something in the thousands. Patting her and loving her is a joy and she returns the love by being my guard. If someone is around they soon learn that they have to get past her to get to me. But family members are not barked at but she yelps like a puppy for joy when she sees them, especially the children.

What should we have called her?

Is Minnie the right name for this pet

Names for Dogs

Can we call them anything we like?

Of course there are no rules for naming dogs and I think just about everone I know has the perfect name. They include Buster, Benji, Bandit, Crosby, Whisky, Beau, Elvie, Lucky, Jemma, Angus, Butch, Ben, Bonnie, Emma, Bennie and Roger. Also there is George, Boots, Choco, Tiny, Charlie, Angel, Peter, Boss, Charm, and a thousand other names that would make this list enormous.

No, there is no right or wrong name for your little friend. But what you give it is a piece of yourself in the name and your love in the calling of it.

Both of my dogs have their names and then a nickname they have been given based on their personalities or demeanor. They answer to both names. I enjoyed your lens...and I'm sorry you just recently lost Minnie. It sounds like you have some great memories of her.

Pet names seem to come to use naturally and Minnie was chosen for your girl perfectly. So sorry she is gone, yet I know she will not be forgotten.

I had two Dalmatians named Zoe and Leo. I had Zoe named long before I got her because it sounded like a glamorous name for a Dalmatian. Leo was a rescue dog called Levi when I got him, and that morphed into Leo.

When I saw , my Chihuahua mix, his ears stuck out sideways (they still do, kind of) so I named him Yoda, but that didn't stick. He is now Xander, which is much more appropriate for him. Buff and I both have sidekicks named Xander

Fun and interesting lens. I'm lensrolling to my Luna aka Lunabelle (yes, I lengthen her name for a nickname) and the prequel, She Wanted a Cat. I named my first cat Pandora because in the legend, when she opened the box all the nasty stuff came out -- which was true of my Pandora's covered litterbox, kind of...

Check out our dogs! Naming them was fun. We named Binky after my sister, George just cuz it seemed to fit him and Curtis after our favorite winery!
