Poems for Dogs and Dog Lovers - Why Do We Love Dogs? Answers in Poetry

Dogs may be funny, smart, obedient and loyal. They let us love them and they give us love in return. Let's explore the world of dogs through published poems and My Original Poetry about dogs; Some of these original poems about our dogs are funny while others are more thoughtful. I do hope you enjoy them!

Original Poems about Dogs

I Will Take You on a Romp

I will take you on a romp

Where dogs and wolves do stomp

Through canine history

Uncovering the mystery

Of man's best friend

That appears to have no end

So be prepared to be enlightened

And laugh a bit; do not be frightened

How a Dog Came to Be

On the History of the Relationship Between Dog and Man

Once the canines were all feral

In packs they faced a daily peril

But a man took a wolf pup as his own

Then human was now his family known

The pup was gentle but also wild

Generations needed to make dogs mild

To be a companion for the tribe

To share their food and drink imbibe

As ages passed the dogs were bred

To tend the sheep or hunt instead

So far from wolves they have evolved

Their world around man is now revolved

Take a puppy, treat it well

That you love him, always tell

A Gala for People and Pooches

A party was held for the local elite

And people attended with Fido and Fluff

Who were groomed real well because of the heat

The folks and the canines were fed well enough

There was one poodle with bottle brush legs

Shaved and shorn like a lamb

The hosts had a safe, immune to the yeggs

That held the deed to the land

When the gala moved out to the backyard pool

The dogs proceeded to bury their bones

A lesson on wealth not taught in the schools

With dessert of lemon and raspberry scones

Whimpering Outside the Door

Whimpering outside the door

My loving dog wanted to enter

Paws stretched out on the wood floor

She wanted attention front and center

On Doggie Breeds

Dogs are varied in their sizes

Color, temperament and bearing

Chihuahua up to Great Dane rises

Through breeding very daring

The AKC has official regs

For breeds to be so labeled

A peekapoo has cutie legs

But its recognition is tabled

Dogs in Every Shape and Size

Dogs in every shape and size

Descended from the wild ones

They give love without a guise

As such we love them tons

Our Dog Bogo

Drip, Drip, Drip

Drip, drip, drip from my dog's tongue

Oh, isn't it cute, how it is hung

My puppy's panting from the the heat

Her air conditioning wets her feet

Those needed drops will help her clean

All four paws and what's between

Higher Math

A game to play while taking your dog for a long walk

When we take our dog for a stroll

We add a 1 or 2 without a real goal

You see, we count up what she does

We do this for fun … just because

Sometimes we look and nothing's there

Just doggy pheromones in the air

But pee mail is a way for them

To share addresses, right? Ahem

Anyway, over twelve is higher math

And we continue along the path
