Our New Puppy

Updated on October 19, 2012

Meet Halford!

As most of you know, our "Pampered Pit Bull," Carmen, recently had to be euthanised because we discovered she had cancer. My husband's solution was to go out the same day and get a new dog we could focus on. We immediately did an internet search for Pit Bulls, because they are our favorite breed. This little guy was discovered on the Animal Humane Society's St. Paul Shelter page. He's a Greyhound/Pit Bull Cross and he was only 4 -1/2 months old. We decided right then and there that this was our next dog, and off we went to get him.

Another Rescue Story

My husband and I have a history of getting rescue animals. All of our pets have been rescues of one sort or another. This little guy was no different. I'll go for a shelter animal any day of the week.

When my son, Ben, saw the picture of our new puppy, he decided that was the dog he wanted, and there wasn't going to be any other one. Just our luck, Halford was in the first cage. There were about 10 other dogs there, but my son was only interested in the one we got. My husband and I tried to get him to look at the others, but he wasn't interested. We weren't going to disappoint him, so that's the one we got.

For a short time, we thought we weren't going to be able to bring him home. He was part of something called the "Pit Bull Project." Because of the bad publicity surrounding Pit Bulls and Pit Bull crosses, there are certain rules you have to follow to bring them home. One of the rules is that there can't be any children under the age of 8 in the household. Oh-Oh! Ben's only 7. Because he was a puppy though, we were allowed to take him.

Cool And Unique Name

Chosen By My Husband

My husband always seems to come up with better names than I do, so he chose the name again. He decided on "Halford" in honor of one of his idols, Rob Halford of Judas Priest. It's a cool name, and it seems to fit him just fine. He learned it within the first week.

What Do You Think?

Do you think we did the right thing by getting another dog on the same day our other one went over the Rainbow Bridge? I think we should've waited, but this way was therapy for both my husband and my son.

After you lose a pet, should you get another one right away?

Every dog likes squeaky toys. This was the first thing we bought for Halford. He loves them.

My First Video Of Him

This is a video I took after my husband bought Halford a bunch of toys. He liked them all so much, he couldn't decide which one to play with, so he played with them all.

A Helpful Book

My husband has this book, and it seems like a great book to read so we can raise Halford the right way.

Helping With Our Grief

We couldn't save Carmen, but we can save this little guy. He's also giving us something to focus on. We should get years of love out of him.

This Will Be Updated

As Halford gets older, and I take more and more pictures, this page will inevitably evolve. I hope you've enjoyed this introduction to the newest member of our animal family.

Thank you for visiting this page. If Halford could talk, he'd thank you too.

That's a cool dog. I know pit bulls have a bad reputation but that's only because there are so many bad dog owners out there. You've got a lucky dog there.
