Pampered Pit Bull

Updated on November 21, 2012

Aren't I Cute?

Hi, my name is Carmen. You know you've seen me before. Mom has written several lenses about me and the rest of the animal family in this house. Mom wanted to make this page special so I can show everyone what I wish every animal could have.

I didn't come from a shelter, but I was rescued from a family that wasn't very nice to me. This lens is to show you how my life has changed since I was adopted by my new family, and how you can do the same for another animal like me.

How I Found My New Family

If you've read mom's lens about me, you know the basics of how I came to be a member of the family, but, I think the story could use some retelling.

I was being raised by a family that mom and dad think were trying to make me mean. In my old family, there were three kids. They threw things at me, and ran their toys into me. My old mom even let people hit me in the face. I was only a puppy, and they shouldn't have been doing that to me. Eventually, I became unmanageable. You would too if you were treated like that. My old family was going to give me to a shelter, but my new family jumped in to save me.

I was 12 weeks old when my new family adopted me. I have a little boy to play with, and he doesn't throw things at me, or run his toys in to me. People don't get to hit me in the face, and I get a walk almost every day. I also have two other animals to play with. I get toys, and food, and I can sleep where ever I want. I don't even want to think about what would have happened if my new family hadn't saved me. I'm a very happy Pit Bull now.

What I Like To Do

I'm more dad's dog than I am mom's. Dad takes me for walks every day unless it's really cold or it's raining. I wouldn't enjoy the walk much then anyways. Mom and Dad both buy me treats, and of course, they both give me lots of love and attention. I like to challenge Dixie sometimes for "Top Dog" spot, but she always puts me in my place. The cat, (I think that's what it's called), and me play together all the time.

I have a boy that likes to lay on me, but I don't mind, I know he loves me, and that's why he does it. He also gives me hugs and kisses all the time. My old family didn't do that. All in all, I have a wonderful life.

My Favorite Toy

Nylabone Dura Chew Textured Toy, X-Large - Chicken Flavored Bone ( Standard Packaging )
Nylabone Dura Chew Textured Toy, X-Large - Chicken Flavored Bone ( Standard Packaging )

Carmen just loves her Nylabones. This is the one that we get for her. It takes her a little while to chew it up, so we don't have to buy them all that often.

Loyalty

Although, she was mostly my husband's dog, she would have protected me, my husband, and even my son, to the best of her ability. To her, we were all members of the pack, and she would have died for us.

Are Pit Bulls Dangerous?

Do you believe the media? Are all Pit Bull dogs dangerous? Let's debate this. Obviously, I don't think they are, or I wouldn't have two.

Is everyone right?

I Have This Book

Pit Bulls For Dummies
Pit Bulls For Dummies

My husband bought this book after we got our first Pit Bull. It covers everything you need to know if you're going to own a Pit Bull. It helped us become great owners, and it can help you too.

Thank You

Mom and I thank you for stopping by. I hope my story put a smile on your face. Not all animals are as lucky as I was, but, if you give me a chance, and raise me the right way, give me some direction and training, you'll have one of the best dogs you've ever had.

I Went Over The Rainbow Bridge

On March 21, 2011, I went over the Rainbow Bridge. Mom and Dad found out that I had cancer. I had five good years with my family and I was very happy. In my honor, adopt a pet that needs some love. Okay?

I hope you enjoyed this lens. Carmen liked making it, and I liked translating everything for her. Remember, any money made from this lens goes to the ASPCA, and even a little bit can go a long way to help out another animal like mine.

First, I'm so sorry for your loss of Carmen. What a short life she had! But, thank you so much for publishing your rescue story, and for saving her from becoming the dog she would likely have been with her first owners! Carmen is proof that pit bulls, like other breeds, respond to the treatment they receive. Thank you for making her life so positive. All animals should have such good homes and loving families!

The way little Carmen was treated by her first family is typical of people who raise Pit Bulls for organized fighting. Thank goodness you got her out of there before she was maimed or turned into a breeder dog.

I used to think pitbulls were terrible creatures, until i got one . we live on 12 acres and he was dropped off on us. we were not going to keep him even though he seemed really sweet. 2 yrs later, he is the best dog i have ever owned. he is awesome with kids, customers (we have a sign shop and he stays here all the time), and other animals. you can take food right out of his mouth. he is awesome. i have to say that all pitbulls are NOT bad.

By the way, this lens is great!

What a lovely dog. Fantastic job and I commend you for being willing to collect and listen to various thoughts about a breeds bad name. Not sure if you're at all interested in learning about BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) but here's a lovely site if you are: http://stopbsl.com/

I also know the ASPCA is trying to raise awareness about the ineffectiveness about BSLs.

      Happy holidays!

      I must say bravo! :-)

Carmen seems like a sweet dog. I don't have a Pit Bull but I have a German Shepherd. Mixed breed actually. Everybody thinks that she's gonna pounce on them and eat their faces off! I hate that! So, I love how you made this lens hoping people will understand and get the point that Pit Bulls aren't dangerous. They are just another breed of dog. Matter of fact, I know someone who has a Pit Bull and his name is Kane. He is as gentle as they come.

      Like I said, bravo! :-)

Oh yeah! I really liked the video too! :-)

      Hi Carmen,

My name is Tigger and I am a pug. I am five years old. After reading your great story, I asked my Mom Karen to let me do a lens too!!

I am pretty smart after all and would love to make new friends. I was fortunate to be bred and well cared for by some great people and Mommy and Daddy picked me up right on my 6 week birthday!!

Ok I better stop or Mom won't have anything new to say about me (BOL) incase you dont know that is "barking out loud".

Oh and by the way, none of us here think pit bulls are dangerous because they are pit bulls, just like any other dog, if they don't go to school and have good families, they might have problems.

And the big Kahuna of dog training and behavior, Cesar Millan, thinks you guys are top notch.

Slobbers , licks and wags to you

Absolutely beautiful lense! Only we humans can speak out for the animals, and you said it all so well here. We are fosters of rescue animals from high kill shelters and abandoned animals in shelters that are too small to accomodate more than 25-30 pets at a time. I love our foster children. With many you can see the abuse they have been subjected to. They shy away from you upon approach and it takes them days, and sometimes weeks, to feel secure with you.

There are obviously breeds that are more prone to being dangerous around humans, but that's because it is simply in their breeding. Whether or not we humans can ever change that remains to be seen, but I'm a total optimist when it comes to animals...so I do believe it's possible.

We just recently lost little Talula who was a rescue dog (runt of the litter), that acquired Distemper during the initial weeks of her life. Despite all of our attempts to save her, it wasn't possible. In the past week we have taken on Carlos and Charlie who are 7 week old puppies rescued from a high kill shelter in Nebraska. They're thriving and absolutely loving the warmth of our home and the constant care and attention they receive from us all.

Thank you Carmen for letting others know that sometimes a little love and caring can go a long long ways!

Congrats !!! I am so glad you saved Carmen from the mean family. I do think most of an animals temperament comes from the way they are trained and treated. Mean people who raise children without respect for animals unfortunately teach the kids to be mean to animals.

What a wonderful story! I too rescue dogs. Pitbulls where I live are chained outside as guard dogs predominantly by one of our ethnic communities. They are such a maligned breed here I'm glad someone is painting the other side of the picture. Congrats on LOTD!

if you love pit bulls and know that it is humans who are dangerous not dogs, then read The Lost Dogs, by Jim Gorant, which tells what sub-human Michael Vick and his cronies did to the dogs and how these so-called dangerous dogs have become therapy dogs, earned their good K9 citizen certificates and more... it's NOT NOT NOT the breed, these dogs were killed and brutally traumatized (I met three of them and am still haunted)... vick should be chained 24/7 in the cemetery where the dogs he killed were buried, then maybe he should be allowed to have a virtual pet.
